Dolenice brings together a cultural monument on the village square and a cycling route that passes through the village. The chapel “Pozdvišení sv. Kříže” gives local history a tangible point of reference; Route No. 5009 focuses on the route and the landscape. Traditional Hody are another feature that may be relevant when choosing when to travel. You can consider architecture, cycling and an annual event as different focal points for planning your trip.

Chapel and local monuments

The chapel stands in the elevated southwestern part of Dolenice’s village square and is an immovable cultural monument. It was built between 1717 and 1725 and is an architecturally valuable central octagonal building. Octagonal means eight-sided. This basic shape differs from the attached sacristy, which is at ground level and rectangular.

The building has a tent roof covered with sheet metal; atop it sits a four-sided bell tower with a bulbous dome, finial and double cross. The chapel was restored from 2016 to 2020. During this time, the roof structure was repaired, a new structure was created for the tower spire, and new roofing was installed. Structural stability was also improved; the plaster and infill panels were renewed, and the altar was restored.

Local monuments in Dolenice also include a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It complements the chapel as another named point of reference for local history.

Cycling Route 5009: route and roads

Cycling Route No. 5009 Břežany–Miroslav–Moravský Krumlov passes through Dolenice. It runs mostly on paved second- and third-class roads and is suitable for all types of bicycles. This provides a practical guide when choosing a bike and route profile. Check road conditions before setting off so that your plans match the current state of the route.

Landscape and trails nearby

Along the way, the route passes through the gently rolling agricultural landscape of the Miroslavsko microregion, alongside fertile fields, orchards and vineyards. Toward the end, it enters the romantic valley of the Rokytná and passes through the Krumlovsko-rokytenské slepence protected area. The route thus combines different landscapes: agricultural land and orchards on the one hand, and the valley and protected area toward the end on the other.

There are also cycling and hiking trails in the area around Dolenice for excursions into nature. Your trip planning therefore need not focus solely on Route No. 5009: both hikes and cycling trips are options for nature excursions.

Hody and when to travel

Traditional Hody take place in Dolenice every year around September 12. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the exact date before you travel. Unlike the chapel’s construction and restoration periods, the event date is only approximate; it can help with planning when to travel, but should not be taken as an exact date.
