Šatov brings together themes that offer different focuses when planning a trip: winegrowing, monuments and the history of border fortifications. On the southern edge of the village lies the Areál československého opevnění, which is open to the public and includes the MJ–S 3 “Zahrada” infantry blockhouse. Other highlights include the “Za historií, vínem a opevněním ŠATOVA” educational trail, the painted wine cellar Malovaný sklep, and traces of local building and wine culture. This allows you to tailor your visit to your interests in history, architecture or winegrowing.

Fortifications and the Malovaný sklep

The reconstructed MJ–S 3 “Zahrada” infantry blockhouse has been restored to its 1980s condition. Its equipment includes two fortress cannons as well as heavy and light machine guns. A nine-metre-high observation tower stands nearby. The blockhouse’s specific details offer insight into the border fortifications, while the educational trail places them in the history of the border village.

The Malovaný sklep offers a different focus. The wine cellar is set into a sandstone slope above Šatov and decorated with sculpted paintings. Wine was never produced or stored there. This sets the cellar apart from a place used directly for wine production or storage, making it a distinct cultural attraction alongside the village’s winegrowing heritage.

Šatov is a village conservation area. The cadastral area contains numerous centuries-old houses, wine cellars and wine-press houses. Protected cultural heritage also includes the Boží hrob Chapel, the perimeter wall, the gate and the associated plots of the site. These buildings broaden the picture of Šatov beyond its fortifications: the village layout and traces of winegrowing are also part of its character.

Educational trail and winegrowing

The “Za historií, vínem a opevněním ŠATOVA” educational trail is an easy circular route of about 3.5 kilometres, with moderate changes in elevation. It can be extended by about one kilometre. This gives you the choice of a shorter loop or a longer route, without needing to assume a specific walking time.

The 18 information panels cover the history of the border village, local fortifications and military bunkers, significant monuments, and Šatov’s long-standing winegrowing tradition. If you are particularly interested in one topic, you can use the panel content as a thread to follow around the loop; at the same time, the range of topics shows how closely local history, military heritage and winegrowing are connected in the trail’s presentation.

Another way to explore the history of wine is the teaching vineyard of old grape varieties. Established in 2001, it displays 19 old varieties that originally grew in Czech and Moravian vineyards. Each variety has an information panel with basic details. During your visit, you can therefore not only note the number of varieties, but also compare their individual labels and origins in the vineyards of the two historic regions.

Events throughout the year

Events offer different highlights, too: Dny otevřených sklepů is one of the popular events in June. In August, Toulky vinicemi Šatova leads visitors through the vineyards. The Festival mladých vín takes place in November and is connected with the traditional St. Martin’s wine festival. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the specific dates in advance.

When planning your visit, you can choose activities according to your interests: the educational trail brings together history, fortifications, monuments and winegrowing in a single loop; the teaching vineyard focuses on old grape varieties, while the events mentioned have their own dates and themes. The fortifications and the Malovaný sklep add two distinct cultural sites in Šatov to these options.
