Church of St. Peter and Paul: Architectural History

The Church of St. Peter and Paul in Volfířov is an oriented, single-nave building within the former cemetery precinct, which is enclosed by a wall. “Single-nave” describes the layout of the church building, while “early Gothic” identifies its historical style. Its origins date back to the early Gothic period, around 1300. The west façade and tower were built in 1767. This distinguishes the original stylistic classification from the dating of two specific architectural features: 1767 refers to the construction of the façade and tower, not to the early Gothic origins of the entire church building.

Olšina u Volfířova: Protected Habitats

Olšina u Volfířova was first designated a protected area on December 10, 1987. The protected area includes a spring-fed and streamside alder forest with an abundant population of spring snowflakes, as well as populations of rare animal and plant species associated with the pond ecosystem. Several aspects are important to the nature story: a clearly described forest habitat, a specifically named plant species, and populations linked to the pond ecosystem. The conservation focus therefore includes both the alder forest and rare species whose association with the pond ecosystem is explicitly noted.

Velká Lhota: Monument and Exhibition

In Velká Lhota, a district of Volfířov, the Evangelical Toleration Precinct comprises two churches and two adjoining rectories. It is a state-protected monument. The precinct also houses a permanent exhibition entitled “Česká reformace v evropském kontextu” (“The Czech Reformation in a European Context”). The four named buildings make the layout of the complex clear; the exhibition title highlights the Czech Reformation in a European context. The precinct can therefore be understood both through its architecture and through the subject of its permanent exhibition.

Trails and Sports

The Dačice–Volfířov route is described as easy and suitable for trekking and mountain bikes. Near Velká Lhota, a nature trail meets the “Cesta valdenské a české reformace” hiking trail; its middle section around Velká Lhota is already marked and equipped with information boards. It is important to distinguish what applies to each: the suitability information refers to the Dačice–Volfířov route, while the markings and boards belong to the middle section of the named hiking trail. Check the current trail markings on site. One hiking route recommends reaching Velká Lhota by bus; check the timetable for your travel date. In addition, construction of the infrastructure for a multi-purpose sports ground in Volfířov has been completed.

Řečice Castle: Check Access

The upper floor of Řečice Castle contains a former castle chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The castle is not open to the public. The chapel should therefore be understood as an architectural feature of the building, not as an interior open to visitors.
