Vlksice: Fortress, Chapel and Hilly Landscape
Accommodation in Vlksice
Vlksice combines a fortress with visible Renaissance features, a Neo-Romanesque chapel and a protected hilly landscape. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in the town, these themes can help you get a sense of the destination: historic buildings, events, landscape and sport fishing each offer something different.
Vlksice is in the Toulava tourist region, on the border between South Bohemia and Central Bohemia.
Vlksice Fortress: historic traces and planning a visit
At house No. 1 in Vlksice, a bank with an embankment that is still visible probably marks the site of a fortified feudal residence. A black kitchen has been preserved in the fortress. Its chimney is unique in Central Europe because of its size. Traces of Renaissance sgraffito are also visible on the fortress and the adjoining courtyard wall. In a compact area, you can see traces of the site, a preserved interior and decorated façades.
The fortress is not generally open to the public. Visits can be arranged in advance with the owner. She can guide visitors through the fortress in historical costume. Before travelling, check whether a visit can be arranged and what type of tour is currently offered.
Open-air performances by Divadlo Kašpar were held at the fortress in both 2019 and 2026; individual programmes vary. If you plan to travel to Vlksice for a performance, check the dates for the specific programme. A performance and an arranged visit to the fortress are separate occasions to plan for.
The historical features also date from different periods: the fortified residence probably already existed at the beginning of the 14th century, while the Neo-Romanesque chapel on the village square dates from 1900. This comparison places the two features in different periods of the town’s history.
Chapel, village square and remembrance
The Neo-Romanesque chapel on Vlksice village square has a small choir loft. Its façade bears a memorial plaque to the victims of the First World War. The chapel thus brings together an architectural detail inside and a memorial on its exterior façade.
Valley, nature park and getting there
Vlksice lies in a valley between the Smutná stream and the Dobřemilický potok. In the Vlksice area, Jistebnická vrchovina Nature Park protects a varied hilly landscape of fields, meadows and small woodland areas. The waterways describe the town’s location; fields, meadows and small woods characterise the nature park’s protected hilly landscape.
Vlksice has a bus stop. Public bus services to Milevsko, Nadějkov and Chyšky are adequately provided, but timetables may change. Check the current timetable for services on your travel dates.
