In the U Mostu area, there are a road bridge and a water mill; St Catherine’s Church contributes an Early Gothic choir to the historical picture, while the chateau dates from the Baroque period. Bus connections to Písek, Milevsko, Čimelice and Prague are also available, as is a named route that passes through Varvazov. This allows you to consider the buildings and travel planning as different aspects of your stay.

Road Bridge and Water Mill in U Mostu

Varvazov’s road bridge is in the western part of the village, in U Mostu, on the through road 1219. It includes a niche chapel with a statue of St John of Nepomuk. The bridge can therefore be described both by its location and by this religious architectural feature. The area and road number provide two concrete points of reference, while the chapel adds a clearly recognisable religious detail to the structure.

Varvazov’s water mill is also in the U Mostu area, in the valley of the Skalice; a residential building adjoins it. It is an important urban-planning feature. In contrast to the bridge, the focus here is on its location in the valley and the relationship between the mill and the adjoining residential building. The two structures can thus be described by different features: for the bridge, the focus is on its roadside location, chapel and statue; for the mill, on the valley, residential building and significance in the village landscape.

St Catherine’s Church and the Chateau

St Catherine’s Church was probably built as a Gothic church in the second half of the 13th century. Its choir is Early Gothic. The dating and architectural description provide two different ways of understanding the church: the stated construction period remains explicitly a matter of probability, while the choir is identified as an Early Gothic architectural feature.

Varvazov Chateau was built in the Baroque style in 1760, possibly on the site of an older fortress. The construction date is therefore specific; the presence of an older fortress on the site remains a possibility. Together with the church, this creates a contrast in time between the probable medieval construction period and the chateau, built in 1760. The architectural features also differ: the church has an Early Gothic choir, while the chateau is a Baroque building.

A Niche Chapel West of the Village

West of Varvazov, on the road to the hamlet of Most, is a niche chapel that forms a striking feature of the landscape. It is a plastered brick structure with a rectangular ground plan; at the rear, it is extended by a sloping buttress. These features describe different aspects of the structure: brick and plaster relate to the material and surface, the rectangular ground plan to its shape, and the sloping buttress to the extension at the rear. The chapel can thus be described by its construction and form, as well as by its location on the road to the hamlet of Most.

Bus Connections and Route

Bus connections from Varvazov run to Písek, Milevsko, Čimelice and Prague. Since services may change, check the current timetable before departure. The route “Z Vráže po Sedláčkově stezce na Zvíkov” also passes through Varvazov; check local conditions before travelling as well.

For planning purposes, this information answers different questions: the bus connections list destinations, while the route describes a path through the village. If you take both into account, check the current timetable and local conditions for the route separately.
