Rovná: Cultural Heritage, Nature and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Rovná
For choosing a destination based on specific cultural and nature-related themes, Rovná offers several points of interest: a chapel dating from 1717, a farmstead from 1852, an educational trail and a natural monument known for its distinctive spring bloom. There are also the Sedlina natural monument and cycling route No. 1260. Architectural history, nature and route information are distinct aspects that you can weigh individually when deciding on your trip.
Architectural history at the chapel and village square
The Chapel of the Holy Cross dates from 1717 and stands beside Rovná's sports ground. Farmstead No. 26 on the village square is considerably newer: it dates from 1852. Its architecture includes a gable in the vernacular Baroque style, a vaulted chamber that served as a kitchen, and a living room with a wooden-beamed ceiling.
The two buildings offer different points of interest for those interested in cultural history: the chapel's construction date is a notable point of reference, while the farmstead has several specific architectural and functional features. The chamber recalls its former use as a kitchen, while the gable and wooden-beamed ceiling illustrate the architectural details described. Thus, a dated religious building and a more fully described farmstead stand side by side in one place, without their histories needing to be treated as the same.
Educational trail and community life
The Naučná stezka Rovná educational trail was officially opened on 20 September 2025. It has five information panels. They present the history and present-day life of the municipality, rare natural phenomena, and historical sights in the surrounding area. The content of individual panels may change. Unlike the two buildings, each with a specific date, the educational trail ranges thematically from the development of the municipality to nature and historical sights in the surrounding area.
Events are also among the traditions described in Rovná: the Modrý Hořec association traditionally organizes Drakiáda and the Morana procession. Alongside the architectural history and the educational trail's themes, these are two named events to consider. If you want to explore Rovná through different cultural themes, the buildings, the educational trail's subject matter and these events each offer a distinct perspective.
Natural monument and spring bloom
The Rovná National Natural Monument lies in a meadow on the northwestern shore of Rovenský rybník. In spring, spring gentian (Gentiana verna) blooms there. This specific connection to the season, plant and shore distinguishes this natural feature from the site's architectural history.
The Sedlina natural monument lies in the northern part of Rovná's administrative area. Sedlina is considered an important site for the highly endangered pale orchid (Orchis pallens); it is the species' only occurrence in the southern half of Bohemia. The two nature-related sites therefore have different emphases: the Rovná National Natural Monument is known for the spring bloom on the pond shore, while Sedlina is notable as a site for a rare orchid species.
Cycling route and other route information
Cycling route No. 1260 runs from Strakonice to Písek via Řepice and Rovná. A field road also leads east from Rovná to Chlum Forest. The information is presented differently for each route: for the cycling route, the number, endpoints and places along the way are given; for the field road, the direction and destination are specified.
Zbuš lime kilns
The traditional lime kilns of Zbuš date from the 1880s. A description from July 2021 mentions two domed kilns built of fired bricks on the southern edge of the disused limestone quarry at Zbuš. At the time, technical details of their construction were still visible. Vegetation and collapsed vaults may have changed since then; if you plan to include the kilns in your trip, check their current condition before visiting.
The use of Rovná limestone is also part of this industrial history: it was used to build barracks, schools and other buildings in Písek. Together with the kilns described, this offers a glimpse of the former importance of lime as a building material, while the chapel, farmstead and educational trail reveal other facets of the area's cultural history.
