Rapšach between culture and nature

Rapšach offers points of interest for travellers interested in culture and nature: the Church of St. Zikmund and a virtual history trail offer different ways to explore the history of the town. There is also a cycling route and protected natural areas. When planning your stay, you can consider whether you are more interested in architectural history, a trail that can be completed in sections, cycling or river landscapes.

The Church of St. Zikmund

The Church of St. Zikmund was built around 1450. During renovations in 1890, it was given a Neo-Gothic tower. The building therefore brings together a medieval origin and a significantly later architectural addition. The church cannot be attributed to a single year of construction: the two dates mark different phases in its architectural history. The entire church building is a listed monument. This protection status applies to the whole structure, not just the tower.

Local history as a virtual trail

“Obec postižená historií” is a virtual history trail. Unlike a waymarked route, it is not marked in the landscape; it can be completed using an accompanying brochure. The brochure is therefore part of the trail concept and is relevant for navigation.

The route is approximately 10 kilometres long and can be completed in several sections. Its approximate length provides a guide for planning, while the option of choosing individual sections allows visitors to divide it into stages. Most stops feature questions or tasks, especially for children. The trail thus combines local history with activities along the way, rather than being limited to a series of waypoints.

Cycling route through Rapšach

Cycle route No. 3, “Vitorazská jízda 2018,” passes through Rapšach and forms part of a regional circuit. The circuit links České Velenice, Klikov and the border crossing. Check route conditions before setting off. This lets you consider the cycling route as a separate part of your stay without confusing it with the virtual history trail.

Pískovna u Dračice

The Pískovna u Dračice natural monument lies within the cadastral area of Rapšach, in a former gravel and sand pit. It is home to a regularly breeding population of the critically endangered European fire-bellied toad. The present-day habitat is therefore defined by a striking contrast: the area originated as a former pit and is also an important habitat for this threatened amphibian species.

The area is accessible to pedestrians and cyclists via public paths. For travellers interested in protected habitats, Pískovna u Dračice thus combines a distinctive landscape history with a special focus on species protection.

River landscape in the Dračice area

The Dračice area includes a deeply winding, gorge-like river valley. Rock blocks shape the riverbed; the area also includes a river ecosystem and the associated habitats of protected plants and animals. This brings a different aspect of the landscape to the fore than at the former gravel and sand pit: here, the river valley, its ecosystem and protected habitats define the description. Together, the cultural and natural attractions offer various ways to choose the focus of your stay in Rapšach.
