Ostrolovský Újezd: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Ostrolovský Újezd
Ostrolovský Újezd brings together trails, nature and local history dating back to the 14th century. If you are looking for a hotel for a visit to the village, you can plan your trip around two questions: would you primarily like to explore marked trails and the surrounding area, or are historic buildings and local history your main focus?
Nature and Trails
The Ostrolovský Újezd Nature Monument protects plant communities containing spring snowflakes. The surrounding area offers varied scenery and beautiful viewpoints. There is also the possibility of gathering mushrooms and blueberries nearby. The nature theme is therefore not limited to a single activity: you can plan your trip around plant life, scenery and viewpoints, or include the possibility of gathering produce.
Ostrolovský Újezd lies at a junction of marked hiking trails. One specific destination to visit is Trocnov, the birthplace of Jan Žižka. The village is a starting point: Trocnov lies about 2 km to the north, and the blue-marked trail leads there. The distance is approximate, so use it as a guide when planning.
Another option is the easy cycling route “Na kole okolo Borůvkovan – Borovanský dětský razítkový okruh” (Cycling Around Borůvkovan – Borovany Children’s Stamp Trail), which is suitable for small children. It runs from Borovany along cycle route 1123 on the road towards Ostrolovský Újezd. As route details can change, check the information before setting off. The destination is the main difference when choosing: the route to Trocnov is linked to a historic visit, while the cycling route starts in Borovany and heads towards Ostrolovský Újezd.
Beran Pond, about 3 km away, is a possible place for swimming. Check the swimming conditions and access on site before making a swim stop part of your plans.
Local History and Buildings
Ostrolovský Újezd is first recorded in the 14th century under its former name, Oujezdec. A castle belonging to the lords of Újezd also stood in the 14th century on a promontory above the Stropnice. These are two distinct aspects of the century: the village’s former name and the specific location of the castle.
The Renaissance chateau in the centre of the village still stands and is a surviving Renaissance fortress dating from the late 16th century. Kryštof Kořenský z Terešova built it in 1569. The Újezdec castle site in the surrounding area is medieval in origin and survives as an earthwork fortification with deep ditches. Its form differs from the Renaissance architecture of the chateau.
A description published in 2021 places the Výklenková kaple (Niche Chapel) about 500 metres east of Ostrolovský Újezd, on the road to Borovany. It describes the small masonry wayside chapel as a structure dating from the mid-19th century; it has been a protected monument since 3 May 1958. Together with the Renaissance chateau and the medieval castle site, it offers different historical points of interest and architectural forms to consider when planning your trip.
The “Spilka” inn is also linked to the village’s history: it is located in the cellar of a former brewery. If you would like to visit, check in advance whether the inn is currently open.
