As a travel destination, Nová Ves nad Lužnicí brings together nature, cycling and historical landmarks. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, the protected areas, cycling routes and architectural monuments provide a concrete guide to choosing where to go. The themes range from river floodplains and wet meadows to routes with named destinations and the history of churches and settlements.

River landscapes and protected habitats

Nová Ves nad Lužnicí is located in the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area. It is also a biosphere reserve designated under the UNESCO programme. The Horní Lužnice Nature Reserve also includes the municipality’s cadastral area. It protects the natural course of the Lužnice and its floodplain, with a mosaic of different wetland and meadow communities. In the Czech Republic and Central Europe, Horní Lužnice is considered one of the last extensive areas of this kind.

The Krabonošská niva Nature Reserve also protects the natural course of the Lužnice and its floodplain. The area is characterised by distinctive relief and various wetland and meadow communities. It also serves as a refuge for numerous rare, endangered or otherwise significant species. The names point to different aspects of nature: Třeboňsko represents landscape protection and a biosphere reserve, while Horní Lužnice and Krabonošská niva refer to the river course, its floodplain and the habitats protected there.

Cycling and paddling

Several cycling routes are linked to the town, but they lead in different directions. Route 1013 runs from the junction in front of the bridge in Nová Ves nad Lužnicí to the railway station. Cycling Route 1 passes through the town and is part of a circular ride starting in České Velenice. Cycling Route 2 also passes through Nová Ves nad Lužnicí and continues to Třeboň. This lets you choose between a connection to the railway station, a circular ride starting in České Velenice and a route that continues to Třeboň. Check the signs before setting out. The surface conditions on Cycling Routes 1 and 2 can also vary.

The Lužnice also offers its own way to enjoy outdoor activities: its natural course is navigable from Nová Ves nad Lužnicí for experienced paddlers. Conditions may vary by season. If you are planning a trip on the river, take into account both the level of experience required and the conditions at the planned time. Cycling and paddling are therefore different ways to experience the landscape, via named routes or along the river.

Buildings and the history of Krabonoš

One of the more significant architectural monuments in Nová Ves nad Lužnicí is the Chapel of St Anne, located right in the town. Another building with a clearly defined current use is the Neoclassical mill by the weir, which now serves as a small hydroelectric power plant. The town’s history thus includes both a significant architectural monument and a building with a technical function.

The Church of St John the Baptist in Krabonoš offers another historical connection. It was probably founded as early as the 13th century and is mentioned as a parish church in 1419. The church preserves a relocated piece of medieval plaster with a fragment of a painting of St John the Baptist. The cautious dating of its foundation and the specific record from 1419 are two separate historical details.

The history of the settlement of Krabonoš also has a clear turning point: in 1950, it was incorporated into the military border zone. Almost all the buildings were subsequently demolished, and the settlement was merged with neighbouring Nová Ves nad Lužnicí. This sequence of events adds the later development of the settlement to the earlier references to the church.
