Culture and architectural history are at the heart of a stay in Mirotice, while the Alšova Trail offers opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. Near the square is the Mikoláš Aleš and Matěj Kopecký Memorial, located in the birthplace of Mikoláš Aleš. There, visitors can learn about the life and work of the painter and the puppeteer Matěj Kopecký. Churches, a Jewish cemetery and historic houses add to the range of things to explore. You can choose what to focus on during your trip depending on whether you are more interested in the memorial and architectural history or the route and its natural and historical points of interest.

The Memorial and Planning Your Visit

The memorial brings together two distinct areas of life and work: the painting of Mikoláš Aleš and the puppetry of Matěj Kopecký. If you would like to include this in your stay, take the visiting arrangements into account when planning. Visits are possible by prior telephone appointment on 382 229 101. For operational reasons, visits are currently unavailable on weekends and public holidays.

Church and Houses: Distinct Building Phases

The present appearance of Kostel sv. Jiljí and its bell tower date from different building phases. The church took its current form during a pseudo-Romanesque renovation between 1870 and 1872. By contrast, the Baroque bell tower beside the church was built between 1753 and 1756, replacing an older wooden structure. The church towers often appear in Mikoláš Aleš’s drawings. This connects the church’s architectural history with a motif from the painter’s work.

Two houses near the square can be distinguished by their architectural features. Měšťanský dům dates from the early 17th century and has a mansard roof; its façade was remodelled in the Baroque style and features an attic storey and stucco decorations. Dům zvaný Rytířský is a Renaissance house believed to date from the 17th century. Its surviving painted façades are also decorated with stucco. Thus, the first house is notable for its roof shape and Baroque façade, while the second stands out for its surviving painted decoration and Renaissance classification.

Jewish Cemetery and Chapel

The Jewish cemetery “Židovský hřbitov” was established before 1647. Approximately 250 gravestones have survived there to this day. The cemetery is locked; access can be arranged on request through the Mirotice municipal office. A visit therefore needs to be planned around making this request.

The chapel Kaplička sv. Jana Nepomuckého offers another point of interest in architectural history. It stands in the Zářečí district on the northern edge of Mirotice and was built as a Baroque chapel in the second half of the 18th century. Together with the older houses, the cemetery and the church’s building phases, it traces a timeline from the cemetery’s establishment before 1647 to the church’s later appearance in the 19th century.

Hiking and Mountain Biking on the Alšova Trail

The Alšova Trail is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. Its stops highlight the region’s historical, natural and archaeological features. This offers a different focus from visiting individual buildings: the route combines physical activity with topics from history, nature and archaeology. These are two distinct ways to experience Mirotice and the region, helping you choose between cultural attractions and outdoor activities.

The memorial focuses on painting and puppetry, while the church, houses, cemetery and chapel offer a range of points of interest related to architectural and cultural history. The Alšova Trail complements these with hiking and mountain biking. You can decide which of these interests will shape your stay based on what you would most like to explore.
