Milevsko – Monastery History, Museum and Nature
Accommodation in Milevsko
When looking for a hotel in Milevsko, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your stay. Monastery history, exhibitions, art, trails through the surrounding area and swimming appeal to different travel interests.
Monastery and sacred architecture
Milevsko Monastery was founded in 1187 and is considered the oldest monastery in South Bohemia. Its visitor tour, “SakrálnĂ stavby” (“Sacred Buildings”), includes the Basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (bazilika NavštĂvenĂ Panny Marie). Its founding history and sacred architecture offer different points of interest. Before your visit, check the monastery’s current schedule, as visitor programmes may change.
The Cemetery Church of St. Giles (HĹ™bitovnĂ kostel sv. JiljĂ) is an immovable cultural monument of the Czech Republic. While the monastery tour includes the basilica, the church’s designation as a monument offers a separate point of interest. This gives you two different perspectives on sacred architecture in Milevsko.
Museum and gallery
On the ground floor of the Milevské Museum, an exhibition presents items relating to the history of the town and, in part, the monastery. It covers the period from the 16th century to the mid-20th century. The archaeological exhibition features finds, most of which come from the area around Milevsko. The museum therefore brings together two distinct themes: a broad historical period and archaeological finds of predominantly local origin.
Gallery M provides space for art exhibitions, events and programmes for small audiences. It is housed in a historic Baroque building dating from the late 17th century, with architectural features from the time of its construction still preserved. The gallery’s art programmes and the building’s history offer different points of interest. Individual programmes may change; if a particular event is important to you, check the current schedule in advance.
Trails, views and nature
The MilevskĂ˝ vyhlĂdkovĂ˝ okruh is 19 km long and passes through the area around Milevsko, crossing hills and meadows, passing ponds and going through forests. Its length and scenery give you practical details for planning. As route information and conditions may change, check the latest information before setting out.
The “Život na HĹŻreckĂ©m lesĂku” educational and nature trail provides information about nature. The viewpoints also offer different views: the Stations of the Cross offers views of the monastery, the town of Milevsko and the surrounding area; HĹŻrka Hill offers a view of Milevsko Monastery. If you are comparing viewpoints, the Stations of the Cross offers views of the town and surrounding area as well as the monastery.
Outdoor swimming pool and visitor information
The Milevské koupaliště outdoor swimming pool has two swimming pools measuring 25 × 12 m and 21.5 × 7.5 m, as well as a paddling pool measuring 5 × 3 m. The paddling pool can therefore be distinguished from the two larger swimming pools by its dimensions. As pool facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit.
The Milevsko Tourist Information Centre sells tourist maps and guidebooks; its selection may change. If you need a particular map or guidebook, ask about the current selection in advance.
