Majdalena brings together the Church of St. Mary Magdalene and the river landscape of the Lužnice. The municipality lies in the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Historic architecture, branching waterways, and natural areas give the place several distinct facets. When planning your trip, you can prioritize these themes according to your interests.

Church of St. Mary Magdalene

The church stands east of the town center, in the direction of the Lužnice. It is a single-nave Late Gothic building; the chancel and part of the nave date from 1534. The main altar features a painting of St. Mary Magdalene, created by the Český Krumlov painter J. Philipot in the mid-19th century. Different historical layers thus come together in the same church: Late Gothic architecture and a considerably more recent altarpiece.

River branches and canoeing

About 3 km beyond Majdalena, the Lužnice splits into the Stará řeka and the Nová řeka. The Nová řeka is an artificial, 13.5 km-long canal with straight stretches. Jakub Krčín of Jelčany had it built in the 16th century. By contrast, the meandering Lužnice has numerous oxbow lakes and pools, providing habitat for many rare animal and plant species.

On the Lužnice, you can travel either along the Stará řeka or the Nová řeka, then continue via the Nežárka to the Lužnice at Veselí nad Lužnicí. Water conditions can vary, so it is a good idea to check them before setting out. Majdalena also has a public campsite for canoeists. Since operating arrangements may change, check them as part of your trip planning.

Natural areas and cycling routes

The Meandry Lužnice Nature Reserve is one of two nature reserves within the municipality of Majdalena. A geological site about 1 km north of the town includes a 2.8 km-long meandering stretch of the Lužnice, with floodplain and a network of former river channels. There is no direct path to the site.

The educational cycling trail Okolo Třeboně also offers an opportunity to explore a topic in settlement history: the Myslivna Barbora stop covers the development of settlement and lies about 3 km west of the center of Majdalena. Majdalena is easily accessible to cyclists via safer cycling routes. This lets you combine your stay with a cycling route and its historical theme.

Recreational fishing in the area

Recreational fishing is possible in the area around Majdalena. The non-trout fishing area 421 041 Lužnice 10 A extends from the weir at the confluence of the Nová řeka and Stará řeka to the Šulcův mlýn weir in Tušť. Since regulations and access conditions may change, check them before fishing. The exact name of the waterway and its endpoints can help you identify the right fishing area.

Whether your trip planning focuses more on church art, rivers, canoeing, cycling, or fishing, Majdalena’s local attractions offer a range of ways to shape your stay.
