When choosing a destination for a hotel stay, Ledenice offers two distinct highlights: historic buildings and local history on the one hand, and ponds and outdoor leisure on the other. Its landmarks range from an early Gothic church and a pillory to traces of a castle and brewery. Several small bodies of water lie within the built-up area and are associated with walks, fishing, and ice skating in winter. You can tailor your stay to your interests, whether you prefer culture or activities by the water.

The church and square as historical landmarks

The Church of St. Lawrence was built around 1300 on the site of an older chapel. Its early Gothic building has a rectangular-ended presbytery; a Baroque tower was added in 1782. A presbytery is the chancel. At the church, you can distinguish the early Gothic structure from the later addition of the tower. The church and rectory are listed as an immovable cultural monument under ÚSKP number 41645/3-219. The same listing also includes a gate and an enclosing wall.

On Ledenice’s square, a stone pillory dating from 1778 stands by the road in front of the school building. It is an exceptional monument to the history of justice. Three statues of St. John of Nepomuk stand in Ledenice. One dates from 1842 and was made by an unknown folk artist. The church and pillory thus represent different themes: religious architecture and the history of justice.

Traces of a castle and brewery

The town hall is housed in a former brewery building, where beer had been brewed since the 16th century. The former castle site lay immediately above the Dolní Hradský Pond; after the castle fell into ruin, houses were built there. The Hrad district lies southeast of the stream. Its name recalls a former manor and is one of the few surviving clues to its existence.

Below the castle was a game preserve, mentioned in 1376. It was among the oldest noble game preserves in Bohemia and disappeared along with the castle during the Hussite Wars. These connections give the local history several different time periods, from the medieval castle and game preserve to brewing documented since the 16th century and today’s town hall in the former brewery building.

Ponds, recreation area, and path

The small bodies of water within Ledenice’s built-up area are popular spots for walks and fishing; in winter, visitors can also go ice skating. They include Bagr, Dolní and Horní Hradský, Dolní and Horní Jáma, Lazna, Parčák, and Slavíček. Unlike these ponds in the built-up area, Adamovský Pond lies east of Ledenice. At an estimated area of at least eight hectares, it is the largest pond in the Ledenicko area and is also known as Adamec.

A former rectory garden with a small pond was transformed into a park-like recreation area in 2004. A combined walking and cycling path was also built from Ledenice to the junction with Ohrazeníčko. Check the path conditions before setting out, as they may change.
