If you choose Außergefild as a travel destination, you can weigh up your interests in nature and culture through a range of themes. The Kvilda Visitor Centre focuses on deer; Jezerní slať and the Bezlesí Nature Trail add moorland and plant life to the natural landscape. St. Stephen’s Church offers a glimpse of architectural history, while the Museum of Reverse Glass Painting in Kvilda provides an art-focused stop. The destinations also differ in format: exhibitions, a circular trail, a nature trail, a church and a museum each offer a different focus.

Deer: Exhibition and Circular Trail

The Kvilda Visitor Centre features exhibitions about the lives of red deer and other deer species in the Šumava region. The Jelení stezka, a 2.6 km circular trail, starts at the visitor centre. It runs partly through the deer enclosure and has three observation towers. The exhibition and trail are two different formats: the exhibitions cover deer species, while the trail’s circular route, section through the enclosure and three observation towers are its defining features. When choosing nature-themed activities for your trip, you can distinguish between an exhibition and a route with a specified length.

Jezerní slať: Raised Bog and Cycle Path

Jezerní slať is a raised bog on the upland plateau of the Šumava Plains. The two terms describe different aspects: “raised bog” refers to the landscape type, while “upland plateau” refers to the regional setting. A wooden boardwalk leads to its centre; information panels explain how the raised bog formed and, in part, its present-day flora and fauna. This brings together the landscape’s formation and information about parts of its current animal and plant life. The circular route around Jezerní slať runs from Kvilda along a new cycle path for tourists. Jezerní slať is three kilometres from Kvilda; the wooden boardwalk leads to the centre. This describes both the distance from Kvilda and the route of the circular trail and the way into the centre of the bog.

Plants along the Bezlesí Nature Trail

A variety of plants, often rare, grow along the Bezlesí Nature Trail in areas that were once small fields and meadows. This connects today’s plant diversity with the former use of the land. The nature experience differs from that at Jezerní slať: there, information panels explain how the raised bog formed and, in part, its present-day flora and fauna; along the Bezlesí Nature Trail, the plants are connected with the former fields and meadows. The two themes offer different perspectives on the nature of the surrounding area.

Church and Reverse Glass Painting

Construction of the new stone church of St. Stephen began in 1892; it was consecrated in 1894. The church is also a protected cultural monument. The construction start and consecration provide its historical timeframe, while its monument status is a separate designation. Its architectural history and protected status are therefore distinct aspects of the church.

The Museum of Reverse Glass Painting in Kvilda is a stop on the Cesta podmaleb. It offers a different cultural point of interest from the church: the church is a protected architectural monument with a dated history, while the museum is designated as a stop on a route. This gives you two distinct cultural highlights to consider when planning your trip, without reducing them to the same type of destination.
