Tvrzice is home to several historic farmsteads and a former fortress. Their varied gables, a grand gate with a dated statue, and the fortress’s location on the village square give the place a distinct architectural history. The “Po stopách Jakuba Bursy” route also passes through Tvrzice. This brings together individual architectural details and a named route, without suggesting that the buildings and the route serve the same purpose.

Farmsteads with Different Gable Shapes

Usedlost čp. 7, farmstead No. 7, is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its gable was originally yellow and blue. The farmstead is attributed to folk builder Jakub Bursa and dates from the height of his career, from 1860 to 1862. This preserves both a specific design feature and a time period: the colors refer to the gable, while the dates refer to Bursa’s most productive period and the farmstead’s construction.

Usedlost čp. 9 was formerly an inn and has since been renovated. It is a surviving part of an originally large farmstead and comprises a residential building, a perimeter wall, and a grand gate. The gate is topped by a statue dated 1807, depicting a bearded old man in ecclesiastical attire with a papal tiara. The year refers to the statue, not to the entire farmstead complex. This distinction helps place the date correctly and appreciate the gate as a distinct architectural feature.

At Usedlost čp. 11, the description is defined by a winged volute gable with a folk-style image. Volutes are curved, rolled-up shapes; the term draws attention to the shape of the gable, while “winged” and the image identify further features. By comparison, No. 7 is notable for its original yellow-and-blue color scheme and attribution to Bursa, while No. 11 stands out for its distinctive gable shape and image motif. These details make it possible to distinguish the farmsteads from one another.

The Former Fortress on the Village Square

The former fortress stands beside farmyard No. 7 on a rise near the north side of the village square. It is distinct from the neighboring farmstead. The protected site includes the former fortress, the associated plots, and the perimeter wall. Two details are therefore useful for orientation: its immediate proximity to the farmyard and its location near the north side of the village square. These describe the site of the complex, not access to individual buildings.

A distinctive detail can be found in the south wall of the former fortress, which faces the village. Two coat-of-arms plaques and an inscription plaque were added there at a later date. The wall thus combines its structural function with decorative elements added later. Together with the protected perimeter wall, this offers a different architectural perspective from the farmstead gables: the focus here is on the arrangement of features on the wall and the components of the protected site.

Tvrzice on the Jakub Bursa Route

The “Po stopách Jakuba Bursy” route runs through Bohunice and Tvrzice before returning to Vlachovo Březí. Tvrzice is therefore one of the explicitly named places along the route. The route’s name refers to Jakub Bursa; the attribution to Bursa in the architectural context here applies specifically to farmstead No. 7. These two references are related, but they are not interchangeable: the farmstead is a single building, while the route describes a path through several places.

If you plan to include the route in your trip, check the current route conditions in advance. To decide whether Tvrzice suits your travel interests, the village offers several distinct points of interest: protected farmstead No. 7 and its gable, renovated farmstead No. 9 with a statue on the gate, the gable of No. 11, and the former fortress near the village square. These specific buildings make it possible to identify the village’s architectural highlights.
