Košín’s profile brings together a waterside landscape, a wetland made up of varied features, and the history of local silver mining. Walks and hikes are also suitable activities. This gives you both nature and local history to consider as different focuses when planning your trip.

Reservoir and Wetland

The 19.8-hectare Košín I Reservoir lies on the Košínský potok, with Košín as the nearest municipality. The stream includes a floodplain and riverside vegetation. The municipal planning document designates part of the Košín I Reservoir, including its riverside vegetation, as a local biocentre. Thus, alongside the water surface, vegetated banks are also part of the area’s natural features.

The Mokřad Košín Wetland revitalizes the site of the former Košínský pond. It comprises a main pool with varying water depths, a littoral zone and smaller pools that provide habitats for small animals. The littoral zone is the area of a body of water close to the shore. The main pool, shoreline zone and small pools are distinct elements of the wetland and illustrate its varied layout.

The reservoir and the wetland are two different types of waterscape: the reservoir is defined primarily by its large water surface and the Košínský potok, while Mokřad Košín features individual pools, a shoreline zone and habitats for small animals. This distinction helps put the local natural features into context without treating the two waterscapes as the same.

The project envisaged a varying depth of 0.3 to 1.3 metres for the main pool, an approximate length of 82 metres and a water surface of 755 square metres. The project was completed in 2022; these measurements refer to the planned main pool. Planting autochthonous trees and shrubs created a natural environment in the wetland, contributing to biodiversity and nature conservation. Autochthonous describes plants that are native to an area.

Silver Mining and Activities

Silver was mined in Košín until 1802. This year marks the end of mining and sets a clear time frame for this part of the town’s history. Mining adds a different perspective on the area to its reservoir and wetland features. If you want to explore the local past as well as the landscape during your trip, silver mining offers a specific historical point of reference.

Košín is suitable for walks and hikes. For cyclists, the route from Radimovice to Košín is relevant: cycle route No. 11 leads from Radimovice towards Košín. Check the current route before setting off. Košín is also considered suitable for water sports; check current access options before making specific plans. The activities differ in how you need to prepare: for the cycling route, it is the route itself; for water sports, it is the availability of current access.
