Horní Vltavice: Trails, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Horní Vltavice
Active nature experiences and a variety of cultural interests are key reasons to choose Horní Vltavice as a travel destination. You can explore trails to Boubínský prales, the geological formations at Jilmová skála, and seasonal activities on the Teplá Vltava or at the Nad Kovárnou ski area. Which of these shapes your trip also depends on the time of year: canoeing and skiing follow different seasonal conditions. There is also an information centre in Horní Vltavice.
Hiking and Geology
Tourist trails lead from Horní Vltavice to Boubínský prales. If you plan to hike there, check trail conditions before setting out. This helps you plan your tour around a specific destination.
At Jilmová skála, periglacial weathering processes have shaped frost cliffs, tors and rock walls. For travellers interested in nature, the focus is on the different rock formations and how they were formed. Jilmová skála is reached via a walkable tourist trail that is more than 250 m from the road. Plan for a walk when visiting.
Canoeing and Skiing by Season
The canoeing sections on the Teplá Vltava vary by season, route and difficulty. In spring, the 13 km section from Borová Lada to Horní Vltavice can be paddled by canoe; its difficulty rating is WW I–II. The section from Horní Vltavice to Lenora is 7 km long, is also navigable in the summer months and is rated ZW C. Check water levels and national park rules before setting out.
The municipal “Nad Kovárnou” ski area is located right in Horní Vltavice. It has three ski lifts and a small snow park with natural and artificial obstacles. The area is seasonal; if you plan to visit for skiing, check current operating status before your trip.
Culture in the Village and Surrounding Area
The Church of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph and St. John of Nepomuk (Kostel Panny Marie, sv. Josefa a sv. Jana Nepomuka) in Horní Vltavice was created from 1724 onwards by converting an earlier chapel. Its local history thus includes an older religious building and its later conversion into a church. The bridge over the Vltava in Horní Vltavice was declared a cultural monument of technology in 1987. The church and the bridge offer different historical perspectives: religious architectural history on one hand and technical heritage on the other.
In the wider region around Horní Vltavice, sections of the Schwarzenberský plavební kanál have been reconstructed. Timber-floating demonstrations are held on these sections several times a year. The Schwarzenberský plavební kanál is part of the complex with Kaplický potok and Vchynicko-Tetovský kanál, which is designated a national cultural monument. The demonstrations take place on the reconstructed sections; the monument status applies to the entire named complex.
