Domanín near Třeboň offers two clearly distinct themes for planning a trip: architectural and local history, and educational trails and ponds. If you are considering a hotel stay in the destination, you can assess whether historic architecture, a hiking or cycling route, or making use of a pond matches your interests. The locations and activities are specifically different: churches and the Schwarzenberg Crypt reveal distinct chapters of architectural history, while two circular routes of different lengths and with different focuses provide orientation.

Churches and crypt: traces of different eras

The Church of St. Giles in the cemetery is a single-nave church dating from the 16th century, with a projecting tower façade. From 1784 to 1876, it served as the Schwarzenbergs’ burial place. The church contains a fresco from 1588 by Tobiáš Fels of Jihlava.

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas was built in 1924–1925 and consecrated on September 28, 1925. In 1926, Karel Svolinský decorated its interior with murals. It is considered a valuable example of modern sacred architecture from the interwar period. Together with the Church of St. Giles and the Schwarzenberg Crypt, it offers another architectural point of reference for the history of the village.

The Schwarzenberg Crypt is at the entrance to Domanín from the direction of Třeboň, on the southeast side of Svět Pond, and is surrounded by an English-style landscape park. The two-storey Neo-Gothic building is shaped like a regular octagon; it contains 26 coffins. The crypt is open year-round. Check the current opening hours and access conditions before your visit.

Educational trails on foot and by bike

The Cesta kolem Světa educational trail is a 12-kilometre closed circular route around Svět Pond, intended for hikers. It runs through the cadastral area of Domanín u Třeboně. Its 16 information boards cover ecology, typical plant and animal species, the history of fish farming and spa operations, and the development of vernacular architecture. The route thus brings together themes from nature, local history and architectural heritage.

The Okolo Třeboně cycling educational trail is a 39-kilometre circular route with 22 bilingual information stations. In Domanín, it runs along the dam of Opatovický Pond. In terms of distance, you can choose between a 12-kilometre circular route for hikers and a 39-kilometre cycling route. The information available also differs: one route has 16 boards, while the other has 22 bilingual stations.

Ponds and nature in Domanín

Domanín lies on the western edge of the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and is part of the Rožmberk pond system. The protected Eurasian otter occurs in Domanín; the white-tailed eagle is also found there. Nový Pond is used as a natural swimming area. Swimming conditions may change; check the current conditions before swimming. Sport fishing is also possible at Nový Pond, subject to local rules.

If you are considering pond activities as part of your trip, swimming and sport fishing are two distinct options: conditions for swimming may change, while local rules apply to sport fishing. The circular routes have their own distinct focuses, too—from the walking route around Svět to the cycling route along the dam of Opatovický.

Local history and event dates

The first written mention of Domanín as villa Domanyn dates from 1367. In 1376, part of the village passed to the Augustinian monastery in Třeboň. These dates give the history of the village a specific timeframe, while the churches, chapel and crypt reveal distinct architectural and artistic traces.

The Svatováclavské slavnosti s poutí is regularly the largest cultural event in the municipality of Domanín. The programme and dates vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the event dates for the relevant year before booking.
