Dolní Bukovsko (Unter Bukowsko) offers several themes for a stay: the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, traces of the former fortress, cycle routes and the beer available next to the Rodinný pivovar Bukovar. The parish church and the traces of the former fortress offer two perspectives on the history of the town.

The church and traces of local history

The single-nave early Gothic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary stands in the middle of the square in Dolní Bukovsko. A former cemetery, now laid out like a park, surrounds the church. The church dates from the period after 1260. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave; together with the early Gothic classification, this provides a brief introduction to its architectural form and period. The location on the square, the former use of the surrounding area and the architecture are distinct but related aspects of the church’s setting.

Gothic frescoes have been uncovered and restored in the church. They add a second perspective to its building history: the date after 1260 places the construction of the church in context, while the frescoes, as Gothic wall paintings, form a distinct part of its decorative history. This allows the architectural form and the imagery to be considered separately without treating them as a single historical feature.

The existence of the former fortress of Dolní Bukovsko is documented in a deed issued by Emperor Charles IV in 1349. The fortress fell into disrepair in the 15th century. Its remains were found in 1924; today, an island in the middle of the village pond and the place name V Hradu commemorate it.

Cycling and getting there

Cyclists will find two distinct geographical reference points. The “Jižní Čechy” cycle route passes through the cadastral area of Dolní Bukovsko. Route 1132 runs via Sviny to Dolní Bukovsko and is part of a cycling tour to Borkovická blata. The first description refers to the cadastral area, while the second names specific places and connects them with the tour to Borkovická blata. The flat landscape of Pšeničných blata adds a distinct landscape aspect to these route references. Check route information locally before setting off.

Bus connections are also relevant when planning your trip: regular buses run through Dolní Bukovsko on the Veselí nad Lužnicí–Týn nad Vltavou, České Budějovice–Týn nad Vltavou and Tábor–České Budějovice routes. As routes and timetables can change, check the current timetable before travelling.

Brewery and tasting

You can sample draught beer at the brewery pub next to the Rodinný pivovar Bukovar. Visits to the Rodinný pivovar Bukovar brewery are possible by prior arrangement. Tasting and visiting are two different options: the first is available at the adjacent pub, while the second requires prior arrangement. If you plan to visit the brewery, arrange it in advance.
