Chlum U Třeboně combines Hejtman Pond with cultural and natural attractions. The pond was created sometime between about 1560 and 1570. The area also features Baroque architecture, a long history of glassmaking and trails through the forests. When planning your trip, consider whether you want your stay to focus on water and recreation, local history or outdoor activities. The different places and routes offer a range of experiences.

Castle, Church and Glassmaking History

Until 1700, the castle in Chlum U Třeboně was a fortress. It was then converted into a single-storey castle with a chapel. Today, the castle and park are in very poor condition and require extensive reconstruction. Check the condition of the castle and park again before your visit. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built between 1737 and 1745 in the High Baroque style. The castle and church thus offer different perspectives on the local architectural history: the castle’s transformation from fortress to castle, and the church’s High Baroque architecture.

Glassmaking near Chlum U Třeboně is also part of the area’s history. It dates back to the mid-16th century; the glassworks at its current site was founded in 1891 and is no longer in operation. This industrial aspect adds to the themes of the castle and church, but the glassworks should not be understood as an operating business.

Moorland, Forests and Trails

The Rašeliniště Pele nature reserve includes areas within the cadastral area of Chlum U Třeboně. It protects a moor habitat in an early stage of development, along with numerous plant and animal species that depend on it. These include some highly or critically endangered species. The forests around Chlum U Třeboně are suitable for hiking and cycling on forest tracks and paved paths. This offers two distinct ways to enjoy nature: forest trails for walking or cycling, and a protected area with its distinctive moor habitat.

For a route with an approximate length, try the Naučná stezka Mikuláše Rutharda. It starts at the dam of Hejtman Pond in Chlum U Třeboně and is about 9 km long. The Historická stezka Chlumem offers a different focus: it leads from the Hejtman – jih campsite past the castle grounds and along the pond dam, then continues via the Stations of the Cross by the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and past the school to the Dešťová zahrada community garden. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Recreational facilities at Hejtman Pond include grassy and sandy beaches, a gently sloping entrance to the water, a water slide, diving boards and pedal boat rentals. There are also jetties and a fire pit on the island. As individual facilities may change, check their availability before your visit. The attraction “Ostrůvek u rybníku Hejtman s lávkou” can be reached via a wooden footbridge about 90 m long. Check locally before your trip to confirm which visitor facilities are available.
