Budkov’s local history is reflected in historic buildings, archaeological traces, an old lime tree and marked routes. If you choose a destination based on specific architectural and landscape features, you will find a range of points of interest here: from a medieval fortification and a mill to burial mounds and cycling routes.

Fortress, Mill and Historic Bridge

In the eastern part of Budkov, the fortress of the Knights of Budkov survives within the walls of the present-day barn. The complex dates back to the early 16th century. One of its distinctive features is a tall, slender roof structure, which originally belonged to the fortress and is considered an exceptional historic monument.

Budkovský Mlýn lies east of Budkov, beside Budkovský Pond. The brick mill dates from 1557 and has Renaissance origins; its gable is Early Baroque. Its foundations also reflect the local conditions: the mill was built in a swamp and founded on oak logs. A residential building with the mill room has survived and is considered a heritage-significant part of a complex that was originally larger. The mill’s construction and surviving building structure are therefore both noteworthy.

At the northeastern edge of the village, a 16th-century stone bridge with two arches spans the Libotyňský Stream. It is on third-class road No. 144 at kilometre 3.965. Its location by the stream and the precise road reference help place this structure within Budkov.

Old Lime Tree and Archaeological Traces

The Old Lime Tree in Budkov is about 300 years old, 29 metres tall and has a trunk circumference of approximately 628 centimetres. Measurements of a natural monument can change over time. Beside the lime tree is a chapel commemorating French soldiers who fell during the Napoleonic Wars. Together, the tree and chapel link a striking natural feature with a specific memorial site.

South of Budkov, the remains of 16 Slavic burial mounds lie at the edge of the forest. They are part of the significant South Bohemian–Austrian burial mound region. This archaeological classification places the mounds in a broader regional context, while their location south of the village and at the forest edge describes their local setting.

Craft heritage also forms part of the historical picture: beside house No. 14, hand-carved wooden beehives dating from 1910 have been preserved. Their precise date and carving make them a distinctive example of local craft history.

Hiking and Cycling

A marked hiking route suitable for walking passes through Budkov. For a cycling trip, the Netolice–Vlachovo Březí route is another option: it runs via the Budkov turnoff and then on to Chocholatá Lhota. It is just under 20 kilometres long, of moderate difficulty and suitable for trekking and mountain bikes. Check the current route and conditions before setting out.

Another cycling route, “Krajem cestovatele Vyšaty a pošumavských menhirů” (“Through the Land of Traveller Vyšata and the Šumava Foothill Menhirs”), passes through Budkov. The two routes are described differently: the Netolice–Vlachovo Březí route is specified by length, difficulty and suitable bicycle types; the other is identified as a cycling route that passes through Budkov.
