Deutsch Beneschau (Benešov nad Černou) can be explored through its architectural history and several nature trails with different themes. Its historic landmarks range from the Church of St. James the Greater, whose origins date back to 1332, to a Renaissance town hall and a column, as well as a monument and a historical exhibition. These offer ways to explore architecture, local history and nature.

Church and architectural history

The Church of St. James the Greater dates back to 1332. It is originally Gothic, has a single nave and is plastered; its tower is on the west façade. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave. Together with its Gothic character, plastered exterior and the tower’s location, this term identifies specific features of the church building. This combines a historical date with a description of its architectural form.

The Renaissance town hall, built in 1594, stands in the square. The plague column, also known as the Marian column of St. John of Nepomuk, is also located in the square. It was erected in 1726 and is adorned with statues of St. Florian, St. Sebastian and St. Roch. The dates place the town hall and column in time; the saints depicted add another specific detail about the column.

The Adalbert Stifter Monument is another historic landmark. It was unveiled to the public in 1936 on the southeastern outskirts of Benešov nad Černou. This adds a 20th-century memorial site to the town’s buildings and older history. The monument is also a reference point on the school virtual nature trail, which passes it along the left bank of the Černá.

Nature trails exploring history and nature

The school virtual nature trail leads through the nature and history of Deutsch Beneschau. Its route description gives a specific sequence: the trail passes the Adalbert Stifter Monument on the left bank of the Černá, then follows the river back to the square and the school. The “Brána do Novohradských hor” nature trail also explores the history and nature of Deutsch Beneschau, but explicitly includes the immediate surroundings as well. The described focus therefore differs: one route centers on specific landmarks and the return journey, while the other focuses on its themes and connection to the area.

The route and length of the “Pamětí Slepičích hor” trail are particularly specific. It is a loop; the longest option covers 54 kilometers and connects 17 stops with information panels. These details describe different aspects: the loop indicates the route, while the distance and number of stops specify its length and information points.

Historical exhibition

The historical exhibition of Deutsch Beneschau is located in the town hall building and is free to visit. Check the current opening hours before your visit so you can plan your stay accordingly.
