Discover Báňovice: History and Landscape
Accommodation in Báňovice
Báňovice brings together architectural and school history, landscape and local traditions. This gives you two distinct themes to explore when planning your trip: historical landmarks in the village and traces in the surrounding landscape. Báňovice was first mentioned in a written record in 1327. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, this focus can help guide your choice of destination.
The Chapel and School History
A Neo-Gothic chapel dating from the second half of the 19th century stands in Báňovice’s village square. It is dedicated to Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. The chapel therefore offers two connections to local history: its architectural style and its dedication. Those interested in religious architecture can explore the Neo-Gothic style alongside a specific religious tradition here.
In front of the school stands a granite roadside marker that probably dates from the late 17th century. Together with the chapel, it draws attention to different periods: the tentative dating of the marker and the chapel’s construction in the 19th century.
The school is another part of the area’s history: in 1946, a stone monument was erected in Báňovice to mark the school’s 50th anniversary. It commemorates Zdeněk Papoušek, who served as headmaster in Báňovice. Papoušek was murdered by fascists in a concentration camp in Kassel. The monument, the school’s history and his biography connect the remembrance of a specific person with the history of the village.
Větrník and Traces in the Landscape
At 571 metres, Větrník is the highest point in Báňovice. A military observation tower once stood on Větrník. Today, only faint relief traces of the Větrník castle ruins remain, visible as rises in the terrain. The high point, the former observation tower and the surviving traces in the terrain represent different aspects of local history: the landscape, former military use and the ruins’ present-day form.
Remains of former mining pits can be found in the Jalovčí forest. These traces add a landscape-related theme to the architectural and school history. There are also eight crosses in the cadastral area of Báňovice. Thus, the village’s religious history includes not only the chapel in the village square but also crosses throughout the municipality.
The Zámecký kopec is associated with the belief that a treasure is hidden there. This treasure story is a local legend. It complements the tangible buildings and traces in the landscape with a traditional tale, offering another way to explore Báňovice’s history.
Dates and Getting There
The date for the pilgrimage is set for the Sunday after the feast day of Saint Florian on 4 May. The village feast is held on the Sunday after 15 October. If you are planning your trip around either date, confirm the exact date locally.
