Sušice brings together sacred architectural history, panoramic views and an extensive network of trails, alongside cultural and recreational activities. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you are looking for a particular viewpoint, trails with several destinations or a place with seasonal services. Step-free access and specific details about an activity may also play a role in choosing your stay.

Anděla Strážce Chapel: architectural history and pilgrimage

The early Baroque Anděla Strážce Chapel stands on Stráž Hill and dates from 1682–1683. It offers a lovely view of Sušice and its surroundings. Capuchin custodian Ladislav of Bílina founded the chapel in 1682; on 3 August 1683, it was consecrated by Jan Dlouhoveský, Bishop of Prague. In 1735, the complex was expanded with the addition of ambulatories. This makes it possible to distinguish chronologically between its founding, consecration and later architectural additions.

Services are regularly held in the chapel on Thursday evenings from June to the end of August. The main pilgrimage is a separate event: it currently takes place annually in early September as part of the so-called Sušická pouť, and also includes religious services. If you are planning your trip around a service or the pilgrimage, check the specific dates and programme in advance, as both may change.

Views and trails around Sušice

The Svatobor lookout tower offers panoramic views across the Šumava and inland. The Sušická pavučina is another way to explore the area: this network of hiking and educational trails covers a total of more than 30 kilometres.

The Sušická pavučina leads to the four peaks of Svatobor, Stráž, Kalovy and Žižkův vrch, as well as through the Otava valley at Na Pátečku. Most trails start at the town hall on the square in Sušice and are marked with colourful spiderweb symbols. The figure of more than 30 kilometres refers to the total length of the trail network.

Lesopark Luh is a popular recreation area for residents of Sušice and visitors to the town. It is just a few minutes’ walk from the square in Sušice. This makes it easy to distinguish a short walk to a nearby recreational area from planning a hike with several named destinations.

Cultural attractions and step-free access

The Sušický mechanický betlém features historic Šumava architecture and notable sights in Sušice and its surroundings. The buildings appear here as part of a mechanical nativity scene. This offers a different way to experience architecture and local sights than the panoramic view from Svatobor, which focuses on the landscape and inland areas.

The ground floor of the Muzeum Šumavy Sušice provides step-free access to the exhibitions on match production and archaeology, as well as to the “V hradbách” exhibition rooms. If this access is important to your plans, confirm the current visitor arrangements before your visit.

Activity on the banks of the Otava

OFFPARK’s Sušice rope park is located on the banks of the Otava. The course has 34 obstacles at a height of six metres, ending with three zip lines. If you plan to visit the rope park, check the activity details against the latest information in advance, as they may change.
