Předslav: Church, Chapel and Fortress History
Accommodation in Předslav
A trip to Předslav offers several cultural and historical points of interest: the Church of St. James the Greater, Tvrz Fortress, the Sokolovna, the Chapel of St. Apolena and the Měchura family tomb. The historical connections range from an early written mention and a probable medieval construction date to a ceremonial opening in the 20th century. There is also a cycling route that passes through Předslav. Architectural history, personal history and cycling thus offer different themes to consider when planning a trip.
Church and Family History
The Church of St. James the Greater is a protected monument. Its earliest written mention dates to 1325. František Palacký was married in the church in 1827. The two dates mark different historical points of reference: 1325 represents the earliest written mention, while 1827 marks a specific dated event in Palacký’s life. More than five centuries separate them.
The Měchura family tomb is located along the northern boundary wall of the cemetery in Předslav. It is the final resting place of the composer Leopold Eugen Měchura. Around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the tomb was moved here from a disused cemetery chapel. The tomb’s relocation is therefore also part of its historical context, alongside its connection to the family.
Tvrz Fortress
Tvrz Fortress was probably built as a water castle in the 14th century. Its first mention dates to 1483. The two details should be distinguished when establishing the chronology: the 14th century is the probable construction date, while 1483 is the first recorded mention. During the Renaissance, Tvrz was converted into a small chateau; in the mid-18th century, it was expanded in the Baroque style. Its architectural history thus encompasses several successive phases.
Sokolovna and the Chapel of St. Apolena
The Sokolovna in Předslav stands on the remains of a former local fortress. It was ceremonially opened on January 29, 1923, and is now used for various sports and cultural events. It thus brings together an older connection to the site, a precisely dated event and present-day use.
The Chapel of St. Apolena is a simply designed Baroque chapel dating from 1726. Unlike Tvrz, whose architectural development spans several periods, St. Apolena has a simple design and a specific date. The two buildings therefore offer different points of interest for exploring Předslav’s architectural history.
A Cycling Route Through Předslav
The “Z Klatov za romantikou do Žinkov” cycling route is about 42 km long and runs from Měčín through Předslav to Točník. The approximate distance gives an idea of the overall length of the route; the order of the places shows where Předslav lies along it. If you plan to take the route, check the current route details before setting off. This helps you take both the distance and the route into account when planning your trip.
