Chanovice: Castle, Open-Air Museum and Educational Trail
Accommodation in Chanovice
Chanovice offers three distinct perspectives on the town: Baroque architecture, the history of village life, and nature themes along an educational trail. The castle and church represent architectural history, while the open-air museum explores living and working from the 18th to the 20th century. The path through the park and over Chlum Hill adds plants, animals and geology to these themes.
The Castle, Church and Architectural History
Chanovice Castle is a Baroque castle set in a park. A Gothic fortress originally stood on this site. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Povýšení sv. Kříže) is next to the castle. Its Baroque building was constructed between 1751 and 1764; it partly preserves elements of the earlier Gothic sanctuary.
The two sites offer different encounters with older architectural history: the Gothic fortress stood on the same site as the castle, while the church preserves parts of the earlier sanctuary within its Baroque building. The traces of the earlier building phase are therefore different too: here, a predecessor building on the site of the castle; there, preserved elements within a later church building.
Village Life and Traditional Crafts
The Chanovice Open-Air Museum presents historic forms of village housing, agriculture, home production and crafts. The period represented spans from the second half of the 18th century to the first half of the 20th century. The subject therefore encompasses both housing and various aspects of work and domestic life.
The museum is a preservation project for endangered examples of folk architecture in southwest Bohemia. Its regional focus and broad time span give a visit a different emphasis from the castle and church: here, rural ways of life and work take center stage, rather than solely the architectural history of individual representative buildings.
Chanovice hosts the annual Den řemesel, a presentation of traditional crafts. The autumn Den tradiční potraviny is a regional festival. The two events have different focuses: one is devoted to crafts, while the other is an autumn festival. If you would like to combine your trip with an event, check the specific dates in advance.
A visit to the open-air museum outside regular opening hours can be arranged in advance for groups of ten or more. As seasonal arrangements may vary, it is advisable to coordinate your visit for the specific date ahead of time.
Educational Trail, Nature Themes and Views
The “Příroda a lesy Pošumaví” educational trail is 2.2 kilometers long, intended for pedestrians and accessible in both directions. It runs from the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Povýšení sv. Kříže) in the castle grounds through the park, over Chlum Hill, and on to the folk architecture exhibition at the Chanovice Open-Air Museum. This makes the route a link between a visit to the church and castle grounds and the museum as a destination.
At nine stations, the trail provides information about notable plants and animals, as well as the area's geological conditions. These topics complement the cultural and historical sites with a natural history perspective. When planning your visit, you can choose between a focus on architecture and village history and the nature themes along the route. The route can be walked in either direction; trail conditions may change.
A 31-meter-high observation tower stands along the educational trail. From there, views extend across the Šumava, from Český les to Českokrumlovsko, as well as across Blatensko and Brdy. The observation tower complements the information at the stations with views of these named regions.
