Štichovice: Village Green and Historic Buildings
Accommodation in Štichovice
Štichovice lies in the landscape along the middle course of the Střela, 5 km east of Manětín and at an elevation of 458 m. The village is also situated on a plateau above the Manětínský potok.
History and village character
A pond dominates Štichovice’s large, roughly circular village green. Together, its shape and the water define the village’s spatial center. The first written mention of Štichovice dates from 1406. In the first half of the 15th century, the village appears among the possessions of the Order of St. John in Manětín.
There are numerous crosses, regularly renewed wooden crosses, and small stone monuments in Štichovice and its surroundings. Most of the monuments in Štichovice remain in their original locations and are cared for by local volunteers.
Church, chapel, and wayside shrine
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a prominent landmark in Štichovice. Its construction dates back to the 14th century; it was extensively remodeled in the 17th century.
The small village chapel dates from the early 19th century. Its features include a three-sided apse, a low triangular gable with a sundial, and a roof turret on the ridge.
The stone wayside shrine stands southwest of the village green, on the right-hand side of the road out of the village toward the so-called New Road to Manětín. It is a sandstone cross on a cylindrical column and a rectangular base. The year 1721 is engraved on the base. The chronology of the buildings in Štichovice spans from the church’s origins in the 14th century to the village chapel of the early 19th century. The church was extensively remodeled in the 17th century; the wayside shrine bears the year 1721. This places the year of the wayside shrine after the church’s remodeling and before the chapel. The dates vary in precision: a single year is given for the wayside shrine, while the church and chapel are each dated to a century. The three-sided apse describes the shape of the chapel’s end; the low triangular gable bears the sundial, and the roof turret sits on the ridge. A roof turret is a small, tower-like structure on a roof, while a gable is the triangular upper surface. On the wayside shrine, the cross, column, and base are arranged one above the other: the sandstone cross stands on the cylindrical column, which stands on the rectangular base.
