Veliny offers two distinct reasons to stay: the wooden architecture of St. Nicholas Church and trails that explore the village or connect it with Borohrádek. If you are looking for a hotel in Veliny, you can plan your trip around whether you are mainly interested in seeing the church and learning about its history, or spending time outdoors. Culture and outdoor activities offer different focal points for planning your visit.

St. Nicholas Church and Local History

St. Nicholas Church was built in 1752 as a wooden log church with a shingle roof. In a log church, the wall structure consists of timber logs laid one on top of another; the shingle roof is another distinctive feature of the building. Today, alongside its original purpose, the church also serves as a cultural and social center. This historic building thus brings together historic architecture and a present-day role in community life.

Details inside the church and within the complex add to the experience: the sacristy houses a so-called Josephine coffin dating from around the 1780s. The complex also includes a wooden mortuary built into the cemetery enclosure. It is therefore part of the cemetery boundary, rather than a freestanding building. From spring through autumn, visitors can look into the church through an iron grille. Check the conditions for viewing it before your visit.

A Trail Through Veliny or a Connection to Borohrádek

The Veliny–Borohrádek cycle path connects the two villages and is 4.5 kilometers long. It is suitable for cyclists, pedestrians, and inline skaters. The Knight Velinga nature trail follows a different route: it passes through almost all of Veliny, but does not form a closed loop. When planning your route, therefore, do not assume that the nature trail returns you to your starting point.

The routes partly overlap: one section of the Veliny–Borohrádek cycle path is also part of the nature trail. The connection to Borohrádek and the route through almost all of Veliny are nevertheless not the same destination or the same route description. If you consider both trails, you can distinguish their shared section from the parts that follow different routes.

On the western side of Veliny, the nature trail leads into the forest to the remains of a former fortress. Scattered along the trail are elements for play and learning, but they are not found all along the route. The “U čtyř pánů” rest area has a wooden shelter where you can sit. These details help you identify the different features of the routes: passing through the village, the forest section, and the rest area are each separate landmarks.

More Information to Help Plan Your Stay

The municipality sells a tourist stamp for St. Nicholas Church, number 1396. If you collect tourist stamps, this is a specific church-related point of interest to include in your travel plans.

Near Veliny is Tábor Mlýnek, a complex of cabins in a quiet wooded area. This is an accommodation option in cabins, not a statement about hotels. Check availability before your trip if Tábor Mlýnek is an option for you.
