Vápenný Podol: Church and Industrial History
Accommodation in Vápenný Podol
Vápenný Podol brings together church and industrial history, walking trails and a museum dedicated to electrophones and guitars. The topics range from the construction history of the Church of St. Wenceslas (Kostel sv. Václava) to the historic Dolní vápenka lime kiln. Former spa use and landscape conservation are also among the area’s distinctive features. If you choose a destination based on cultural and natural interests, you will find several clearly distinct points of interest here.
Church, Construction History and Art
Construction of the Church of St. Wenceslas (Kostel sv. Václava) began in 1788 on the site of an earlier chapel. The church was completed in 1790, and the tower was finished in 1796. The dates therefore mark different stages: the start of construction, completion of the church and the later completion of the tower. This makes it possible to understand the construction history in several stages rather than reducing it to a single completion date.
The furnishings add later details to this picture. An organ, made by the Prague-born organ builder Petr, was installed in the gallery in 1892. The church also houses the Baroque painting “Adoration of the Magi” (“Klanění Tří králů”) by Jan Onghers. The building, organ and painting thus represent different aspects of the church’s history: the church’s origins, an instrument added later and a work of art in the church interior.
Lime Kiln and Former Spa
The Dolní vápenka was established in 1873 as a two-shaft lime kiln with external heating. Its location is precisely described: in a hollow in the terrain on the right bank of the Podolský potok. Its date, construction type and location paint a concrete picture of this technical monument. The lime kiln offers a different way to explore local history than the church, focusing on the structure of the installation and lime processing.
Another historical highlight is the Lázně svatého Václava spa. The spa’s historic building remains in Vápenný Podol. Spa operations continued until around 1940; blasting during limestone extraction destroyed the spring. The surviving building and the history of the spring tell different parts of this past: the building has been preserved, while the former operations and the cause of their end are part of the area’s history.
Trails and Landscape
The Horem dolem Podolem nature trail includes a stop at the Church of St. Wenceslas (Kostel sv. Václava). Stará cesta, by contrast, is known for its views, which stretch across the entire municipality of Vápenný Podol, its valley and the Prachovice horizon. The lime-tree avenue along Stará cesta was later granted the status of a state-protected avenue. The routes therefore have different emphases: the nature trail includes a stop at the church, while the landscape and protected avenue are key features of Stará cesta.
A description from 2021 also mentions a red-marked hiking route that runs through Vápenný Podol from west to east. Since this description dates from 2021, check the current trail markings locally. This makes it possible to distinguish the information about the nature trail, Stará cesta and the red-marked route without treating them as one and the same route.
Museum and Information Point
Muzeum Retro Jolana is a private museum of Czech electrophones, guitars and equipment. It is described as the first private museum of its kind in the Czech Republic. If you plan to visit, check the visitor arrangements before your trip. The museum offers a distinct focus alongside church architecture, art and lime production.
The unstaffed BIS information centre on the Paleozoic is located near the church and the rock. BIS adds a geological focus to the historical topics mentioned above. Together, the church, lime kiln, former spa, trails and museum offer different reasons to explore Vápenný Podol; when planning your trip, you can decide which of these to focus on.
