Svídnice as a travel destination is shaped by cultural and historical landmarks, natural areas and marked trails. In Práčov, there is a Gothic church and archaeological traces, as well as the history of the paper mill and the Strádovské Peklo Nature Reserve. If you are looking for hotels in Svídnice, these different themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

Nature and landscape around Svídnice

The Strádovské Peklo Nature Reserve extends into the cadastral area of Svídnice u Slatiňan and covers 87.32 hectares. It protects a complex of near-natural scree forests with endangered plant and animal species. The focus here is therefore on a clearly defined habitat and its protection.

Another record of earlier human activity is the prehistoric hillfort site in Práčov. Remains of its fortifications are still visible, especially along the path to Trpišov. Most of the site is on private property. This restriction is important to bear in mind when including the archaeological traces in your travel plans.

Near Svídnice, southwest of Práčov, lies the Slavická game reserve, where red deer and mouflon are kept. The reserve adds a specific connection to animal husbandry to the nature theme. Together with the nature reserve, it shows that the landscape around Svídnice is not limited to a single natural area.

The Vlastivědná stezka Krajem Chrudimky nature trail runs between the Křižanovice Reservoir and the Práčov balancing reservoir. Along this stretch, the Chrudimka has created a deep, gorge-like inversion valley. The two named reservoirs provide clear geographical reference points for the trail; the valley also describes the landform created here by the Chrudimka.

Architectural history and local monuments

The Church of St James in Práčov is the oldest surviving building in the municipality of Svídnice. Part of the building dates from 1364 to 1369. The church is considered an important example of mature Gothic architecture from the Luxembourg period. Its history can therefore be tied both to a specific period and to an architectural classification.

The furnishings include an organ from 1815, which was restored to use in 2015. The two dates highlight different things: the first indicates when the instrument was made, while the second marks its later return to use.

The village square in Svídnice is also home to the bell tower, a cultural monument with a classically designed octagonal base and a roof. Its form differs from the Gothic church in Práčov: here, the octagonal base and classical design define the description of the monument.

Paper mill, castle and trails

The Svídnice paper mill, building No. 9 by the reservoir, is also known as Horní mlýn. The privately owned building dates from the 18th century and is associated with the municipality’s most significant period of economic prosperity. The paper mill was founded in 1714 and expanded to include a mill in the early 19th century. Its founding and subsequent expansion thus mark two different stages in its history.

The ruins of Strádov Castle are also near Svídnice, southeast of Práčov on a rocky promontory on the right bank of the Chrudimka. The castle dates from the 14th century. Its location and age make it a historical topic distinct from the buildings in the municipality itself.

To find your way along the named routes, you can compare their colours, courses and activities. A blue-marked hiking trail passes through Svídnice; a yellow-marked hiking trail leads from Slatiňany to Práčov. A marked local cycling route also runs through Práčov. The routes therefore differ not only in their markings, but also in whether they are described as hiking trails or a cycling route. The route between Slatiňany and Práčov also specifies its starting point and destination, while the other two routes pass through Svídnice and Práčov, respectively.
