Staré Hradiště is a destination for travelers who want to consider architectural history and cycling when choosing where to stay. The village is home to the granary and a memorial to those who fell in the First World War; a preserved historic settlement pattern also shapes the character of the place. Two cycling routes of different lengths pass through Staré Hradiště, and the longer one also mentions Kunětická hora and its historic chapel. You can therefore treat local history and the listed routes as two specific priorities when planning your trip.

Cultural history in the townscape

The Baroque granary stands on the southeastern edge of the village. It was built on the foundations of the former fortress and is visible from a great distance. It has been listed as an immovable cultural monument since 1958. The historic part of Staré Hradiště, including the granary, also has a preserved urban structure, with a historically shaped layout, urban axes and settlement cores. The layout refers to the inherited form of the settlement fabric; the axes make its spatial organization tangible, while the settlement cores point to historic focal points. The granary is therefore not the only feature in view as a standalone building: the layout of the historic part of the village is also part of its inherited character.

Remembrance and historic architecture

A memorial to those who fell in the First World War adds a distinct focus on remembrance alongside the architectural history. The Chapel of St. Catherine of Alexandria is located on Kunětická hora. The Pernštejns built it at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries; its features include the original vault structure and a Baroque altarpiece. The dates refer to different features: the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries marks the construction of the chapel, while “Baroque” describes the altarpiece. If you are interested in architecture, you can consider the building’s history and its furnishings separately, rather than assigning both to a single period. Kunětická hora itself is a national cultural monument.

Cycling routes: compare length and course

Two cycling routes are listed in archived route records from 2004. Route 4123, which is 7.2 km long, connects Stéblová, Srch, Staré Hradiště and Pardubice. Route 4124, which is 15.6 km long, runs from Pardubice-Cihelna via Staré Hradiště, Brozany, Ráby, Kunětická hora, Němčice and Hrobice to Opatovice nad Labem. The second route is more than twice as long as the first; the routes also differ in the places and endpoints listed. Their length and course provide concrete points of comparison when planning your rides. Since the route records on which this information is based come from the 2004 archive, check the current route before setting off.

Staré Hradiště is also a permanent member of the Hradubická labská municipal association. Its cycling route project aims to connect Hradec Králové and Pardubice along the Elbe, make the Elbe lowlands accessible and create safe cycling connections between the participating municipalities. The project’s goal offers a regional perspective on cycling; the numbered route records each give specific lengths and sequences of places.
