Sloupnice combines a distinctive architectural heritage with activities organized by the local hiking club in the surrounding area. When planning a stay, you can focus on two areas: historic buildings and memorial sites, or hiking and—when weather conditions are suitable—cross-country skiing. The Sokolovna also brings together architectural history and cultural use; its events program may change. If you’re looking for a hotel in Sloupnice, this distinction can help you decide on the purpose of your stay first.

Local History and Architectural Heritage

The Sokolovna in Sloupnice has been a protected monument since November 3, 2014. The building was constructed in 1930 as a distinctive local example of sports architecture by native architect Vojtěch Vanický. Its style belongs to Czech architectural modernism and is influenced by Dutch brick architecture. The Sokolovna can therefore be considered in terms of its period of construction, its architect and its architectural influences. A description from April 2026 mentions theater performances, balls, concerts and other cultural events there, in addition to sports. The events program may change.

Sloupnice’s history is also reflected in the development of the village itself. During the High Medieval colonization, an extensive forest-strip village developed around the Sloupnický potok, one of the largest rural settlements in the Orlickoústecko area. This brings the historic settlement pattern into focus alongside individual buildings. It offers a different perspective on local history from the architectural and religious history of the churches and chapels.

The Church of St. Nicholas is a rural church of Gothic origin without a tower. It was rebuilt in Baroque style around 1712 to take its present form. The Protestant church in Sloupnice is evidence of the establishment of Tolerance churches shortly after the Edict of Toleration was issued in 1781. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk offers a different architectural accent: it is an unusual open chapel in the form of a canopy over a Baroque statue dating from 1769. Together, these buildings represent different forms and historical contexts; the years 1712 and 1781 mark distinct periods in the area’s history.

The Socha Svobody is also among the historic memorial sites. The monument was created in the 1920s for the victims of the First World War. After the Second World War, it was also dedicated to victims of that war from the surrounding area. The later dedication thus adds to the original reason for the memorial. As you plan your trip, the churches, chapel and monument can offer different focal points within the cultural and historical theme.

Hiking and Activities Throughout the Year

The local hiking club organizes hikes in the area around Sloupnice. When weather conditions are suitable, it also organizes cross-country skiing outings there; these depend on snow conditions. Hiking and cross-country skiing are thus two distinct ways to think about the activities organized by the club: for cross-country skiing, suitable weather is explicitly a prerequisite.

The Pochod Sloupenskými lesy offers hiking routes of 8, 15 and 25 km. Route options may vary from one edition to another. The three distances give you a concrete choice of route length; for a specific edition, keep in mind that the options may change. This makes it possible to compare the Pochod by a different measure than the hikes organized by the local club, for which no route lengths are specified. For cross-country skiing, meanwhile, snow conditions are decisive. If you want to include one of these activities in your stay, keep an eye on the relevant edition of the Pochod or on the weather conditions, as applicable.

When choosing a stay, the distinction between the themes is clear: the Sokolovna, churches, chapel and Socha Svobody lead to architectural and memorial history; the club hikes, the Pochod and the weather-dependent cross-country skiing outings focus on physical activity. You can choose according to your interests without combining the different buildings and activities into a single program.
