Kamenná Horka: Local History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Kamenná Horka
Kamenná Horka combines a layered local history with opportunities for hiking in the surrounding forest areas. The municipality lies on the western side of the Hřebeč Massif. Two different perspectives can help you plan your trip: the historical traces around the parish church of St. Mary Magdalene and the trails that run through different parts of the village. Depending on your interests, you can focus more on architectural and settlement history or on outdoor activities.
Church and Historical Traces
The parish church of St. Mary Magdalene is first mentioned in the 14th century. It was originally Gothic and was remodeled in the Baroque style in 1749. These two dates refer to different milestones: the 14th century marks the church’s first mention, while 1749 marks its later remodeling. A first mention is not the same as an exact construction date.
Access to the cemetery in front of the church is through a bell tower dating from the second half of the 15th century. The cemetery contains a surviving tombstone from 1590, and a stone cross from 1836 stands in front of it. A sculptural group of the Holy Trinity from 1757 is also located near the church. These landmarks span the Late Middle Ages to the 19th century, giving the church grounds several historical points of reference.
From Two Settlements to the Present-Day Municipality
A former regional boundary divided Kamenná Horka into a Bohemian settlement and a Moravian settlement. In 1950, the two settlements were united to form what is now Kamenná Horka. This development adds a perspective on the village’s origins to the history surrounding the church: today’s municipality grew out of two separate settlements that were later brought together. The area’s historical location at a crossroads of the so-called salt routes is another part of this story. Local history therefore encompasses both the development of the settlements and former travel and transport routes.
Hiking and Cycling
The extensive forests around Kamenná Horka are suitable for hiking. Two marked trails can be distinguished by their location and direction: the yellow-marked hiking trail runs through the lower western part of the village toward Horecký hřbet. The red-marked trail passes through the upper eastern part between Březová nad Svitavou and Hřebeč. For orientation, both the part of the village and the direction of travel are relevant.
For a cycling trip, cycle route 4029 runs through the upper part of Kamenná Horka on a paved road. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between the hiking trails described above and the cycling route. Hiking trail markings, cycle route signs, and trail conditions may change, so check the current markings and conditions before setting out.
Plan Your Journey
Kamenná Horka has regular bus services on weekdays. The nearest railway stop is Svitavy-Lány. These are two different points of reference for planning your trip: the bus service in Kamenná Horka and the location of the nearest railway stop. Check the current bus timetable before traveling; information about rail services may also change.
You can plan your stay around your own interests: the church and its historical landmarks focus on architectural and local history, while the forests and marked trails offer opportunities for hiking. The two hiking trails differ mainly in their location within the village and their direction; the paved road used by cycle route 4029 offers a separate option for cyclists.
