Ostřešany: Cultural Traces and a Pond Landscape
Accommodation in Ostřešany
Ostřešany has tangible cultural traces, and the surrounding area also offers paths and destinations for excursions. A house with frescoes, a war memorial with a striking sculpture, ponds, and a cycling link to Nemošice offer different points of interest for visitors. When planning, it is worth distinguishing historical features of the village from activities with special visiting conditions.
Cultural Traces in Ostřešany
The oldest known written mention of Ostřešany dates to December 23, 1340. The former name of the village, Wostřešany, probably came from the term “vostrých střech” (“pointed roofs”), referring to the many such roofs found there. Thus, a precisely dated historical reference sits alongside an explicitly uncertain linguistic interpretation.
The facade of house No. 11 bears original frescoes by painter Eva Filemonová; the house is associated with the artist. The artist’s name and the building are directly connected here: the frescoes anchor the cultural theme in a specific house, while the history of the village’s name offers another point of access.
The Ostřešany war memorial is dedicated to those who fell in the two world wars. It was created in 1934 by sculptor Miloslav Baše and architect Karel Řepa. It stands in the corner of a paved square area in a small park in front of the school. The larger-than-life statue depicts a kneeling wounded soldier. The dedication, year of creation, and figure can be considered separately: the dedication identifies the reason for the memorial, the statue its specific depiction, and the location places the memorial within the village.
Ponds, Paths, and Excursions
A description dated October 30, 2022, mentions a cascade of four ponds in Ostřešany; the configuration may change. A new path with a water-bound surface, also described on that day, leads around the ponds. The surface and its upkeep may change. Check the conditions before going for a walk.
A 700-meter-long cycle path connects Ostřešany and Nemošice; it opened in 2015. Its length makes the link a clearly defined short cycling leg.
The natural monument Nemošická stráň in nearby Nemošice makes a suitable excursion from Ostřešany. The civil defense observation post is also located near Ostřešany, on Mikulovický kopec. On opening days, it can be visited with a guide; dates depend on events. Check the opening days before planning your visit.
Nature and Activities in the Surrounding Area
On the outskirts of Ostřešany, in the fields, is Kozí vrch Ranch, which includes a small riding club. This information was reported on October 30, 2022. If you are planning to take part, confirm current availability independently.
Near Ostřešany, a nesting site of sand martins in an old sand pit has been monitored since 1981. This long period of observation provides a different temporal emphasis from the dated historical first reference or the 1934 memorial, and complements the cultural traces with a nature theme.
