Dlouhá Loučka: History and Nature
Accommodation in Dlouhá Loučka
Dlouhá Loučka offers two distinct starting points for planning your trip: the cultural and historical traces at Hradisko and the Dlouholoučské stráně Nature Reserve on the northeastern edge of the village. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these themes can help you decide what you would like to focus on: local history and archaeology, or nature and protected habitats.
Hradisko and the History of the Village
The oldest written mention of Dlouhá Loučka dates from 1365. Hradisko points to an earlier medieval context: the remains of a water castle and an outer bailey are located there, dating from the 12th to 13th centuries. Thus, the written mention of the village and the dating of the castle complex represent two distinct historical periods.
Hradisko lies on a slight rise above the confluence of two streams. The remains of ditches and ramparts are still clearly visible, as noted in an entry by the National Heritage Institute (NPÚ) updated on 9 June 2023. Together, the water castle and outer bailey form the archaeological point of interest; this is not just about individual visible ditches or ramparts, but about the remains of a medieval castle site.
Another connection to the village’s history is Karel Stellwag (1823–1907). The ophthalmologist and university professor was born in Dlouhá Loučka. For travelers who also view history through biographies, his life adds a person from the village’s more recent history to Hradisko’s archaeological perspective.
The Hasičský ples is also one of the popular events in Dlouhá Loučka.
Nature Reserves and Landscape
The Dlouholoučské stráně Nature Reserve lies on the northeastern edge of Dlouhá Loučka. It protects marl slopes with extensive natural and semi-natural plant communities. These are found in extensively managed meadows and wooded field margins; protected plant and animal species are also a focus there. The area’s natural significance therefore encompasses both habitats and the species that live in them.
In the approved management plan for the period 2024 to 2038, Phengaris arion is classified as highly endangered. At the same time, the population is showing an increasing trend and is locally common.
Another protected area of interest is the Rohová National Nature Reserve. It has been designated as a protected area since 2019 and extends into the cadastral area of Dlouhá Loučka. For orientation, it is worth distinguishing the two locations: Dlouholoučské stráně lies on the northeastern edge of the village, while Rohová is connected to it through the cadastral area.
Which focus is right for your stay?
If you are particularly interested in medieval history, Hradisko offers a specific point of interest: the rise above the confluence of two streams, the remains of a water castle and outer bailey, and visible ditches and ramparts. Dlouholoučské stráně and Rohová, by contrast, represent different aspects of nature conservation. This makes it possible to explore Dlouhá Loučka through the themes that matter most to you during your stay.
