Landscape and Getting There

Staré Město Pod Sněžníkem can be explored through two defining themes: history and trails through the landscape. At 1,424 m, Králický Sněžník is considered the natural landmark of the surrounding region. Other destinations mentioned include Paprsek in the Rychlebské hory and Dalimilova Rozhledna near Staré Město. The cultural sites offer a different focus, ranging from St. Anne’s Church to exhibitions about the Czechoslovak Army and the history of the town.

A local train takes you to Staré Město from Hanušovice, an express train station on the Olomouc–Jeseník line. For road travel, one route runs from Hanušovice through the Krupá River valley; another road leads from Branná to Staré Město. Rail and road therefore offer different ways to get there, without implying a specific travel time. Check the timetable or current traffic conditions before setting out.

Fortification Trails and Museums

The trail in the Staroměstská pevnostní oblast is 8 km long and connects several infantry bunkers built to defend the area before the Second World War. It is marked in red and white and can be started at the railway station. The route offers a direct link between a hike and the area’s military history. Access to individual bunkers may vary; the trail markings and access conditions may change during maintenance. Check the conditions before your visit.

The museums also present different historical perspectives. The Muzeum vojenské historie a Staroměstska includes a fortification exhibition about the start of construction of permanent fortifications in the 1930s, as well as a wide-ranging historical overview of the Czechoslovak Army. The Staré Město Museum is housed in a single room on the ground floor of the town hall and opened in 2001. Its collection comprises around two hundred objects and historical archival materials, including dozens of photographs of architectural landmarks and natural beauty spots. St. Anne’s Church complements these themes as a listed building: the present-day Catholic church was built in 1618.

Mountain Destinations and Activities

A route from Staré Město leads to Paprsek, located at 1,022 m above sea level in the Rychlebské hory. Another destination is Dalimilova Rozhledna, a stone observation tower on 918 m-high Větrov near Staré Město. The tower is a faithful replica of the former observation tower on Králický Sněžník.

For trail rides and riding lessons, consider Jízdárna Černý kůň at Sportovní 333 in Staré Město pod Sněžníkem. It offers rides through the landscapes of Králický Sněžník, Rychlebské hory and Jeseníky, as well as riding lessons led by experienced instructors. Another seasonal option is the more than 140 km of maintained cross-country ski trails in the Staroměstsko area, with varying difficulty levels. Trail maintenance and snow conditions are seasonal. These activities and destinations give your stay a range of options, from fortification history and museums to hiking, horse riding and cross-country skiing.
