Osek Nad Bečvou lies on the right bank of the Bečva, in its valley and amid fertile countryside. Two themes go hand in hand when planning a trip: the river landscape, with its natural features and fishing opportunities, and a townscape whose history can be traced through its street layout, village square and historic buildings.

The Bečva, natural surroundings and activities

The protected area “Bečva – Žebračka” also includes the cadastral area of Osek Nad Bečvou. Within the protected area, the artificially created Strhanec Canal forms a distinct habitat: it flows more slowly and has silted up. The thick-shelled river mussel (Unio crassus) lives here. The canal’s characteristics and its protected species give this natural area a distinctive character.

A cycling path runs along the Bečva in Osek Nad Bečvou and is also open to visitors. The town’s sports complex is also available to visitors. For those who prefer to spend their time by the water, the fishing grounds offer another connection to the river area; cycling, sports and fishing are different ways to experience the town.

The Jadran fishing ground in Osek Nad Bečvou is also open to visitors. The Bečva 2 fishing ground stretches from the weir at the railway station in Přerov to the old weir upstream of Osek Nad Bečvou. If you would like to fish there, check the applicable rules and fishing-ground boundaries before your visit. The two descriptions refer to different fishing grounds: Jadran is located in Osek, while Bečva 2 is defined by its endpoints.

Historic townscape and buildings

A royal road, historically known as “královská (strata regia),” has run north from Vienna through Osek Nad Bečvou since the earliest times. The historic townscape developed on both sides of this former road. The traditional layout includes a spacious village square with a church, cemetery and school. Another historic trade route through the town was known as the Roman Amber Road; merchants used it on their way north to the amber deposits.

A record of church revenues from 1322 is considered the oldest documented evidence of Osek Nad Bečvou. It is preserved in a contemporary parchment missal belonging to the local church. The entry marks the oldest cited written record of the town, while the royal road and the Amber Road describe different aspects of its historic routes.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (“Kostel Povýšení sv. Kříže”) is a High Baroque church built on Gothic foundations. It was constructed between 1783 and 1791 and stands with the cemetery in the town centre. The church thus reveals two distinct building phases: the Gothic foundations and the later High Baroque church. It adds a specific building and a precisely dated period to the history of the village square.

The Baroque heritage also includes the ensemble “Statue of St. Thaddeus and Statue of St. John of Nepomuk” (“Socha sv. Tadeáše a socha sv. Jana Nepomuckého”), a local sculptural work from 1748. The Chapel of St. Wenceslas (“Kaple sv. Vendelína”) stands on a ridge. Passers-by can ring its bell, made by the Tomášková–Dytrychová bell foundry. Alongside the central church and village-square ensemble, the town therefore offers another named destination with a specific detail to discover.

If you are planning your trip around a particular theme, the focus is clear: the river area is defined by the cycling path, fishing grounds and natural surroundings; for local history, the former royal road, village square and Baroque buildings take centre stage. When looking for a hotel in Osek Nad Bečvou, you can consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay.
