Staré Město: River Landscape and History
Accommodation in Staré Město
Staré Město can be explored through its landscape and architectural history. In the Profil Morávky area, the river has carved a gorge-like riverbed; historic buildings can be found in the municipality and along the roads to Baška and Skalice. Walks and cycling trips complement the nature-related attractions. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Staré Město, these different highlights can help you get a sense of the municipality as a destination.
River landscapes and excursions
In the Profil Morávky area, the Morávka forms a gorge-like riverbed with rock ledges, rapids, and gravel terraces. The rock ledges and rapids give the riverbed distinctive shapes; the gravel terraces complete the picture of this river landscape. If river landscapes are a particular priority when choosing a destination, these features offer a specific connection with nature.
Hůrky Hill adds a different dimension to the landscape: at 342 metres, it is the highest point above Staré Město. Its elevation is clearly distinct from the riverbed features in Profil Morávky. This lets you weigh the hill as a landscape feature against the river area as a nature attraction, without treating them as a single excursion destination.
From Staré Město, you can take walks in the Profil Morávky Natural Monument Zone. Conditions in the zone may vary, so take this into account when planning. The surrounding area is also suitable for cycling trips.
Churches, chapels, and local history
The Church of St. Joseph in Staré Město was built in a purely Romanesque style from 1902 to 1903 and completed in 1904. It is dedicated to St. Joseph. Its construction dates and architectural style provide a historical context, while its dedication adds a religious dimension. The church thus combines a clearly dated building history with a specific patron saint.
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary stands on the road from Staré Město to Baška. Local farmers built it in 1878 in thanksgiving for the harvest. The builders, occasion, and year of construction give a specific account of its history. If you are planning a visit, check the chapel’s condition again when you arrive.
Historic Jamnice also broadens the picture beyond religious buildings. Jamnice was a settlement with a fortification on the trade route from Moravia to Těšínsko. The focus here is not a religious dedication or architectural style, but the historical connection between the settlement, fortification, and trade route.
The Na Skotni Chapel is on the road from Staré Město to Skalice. A 2025 description calls it well maintained but carefully locked; it notes that it is hardly possible to see inside through the door, which is made entirely of wood. Check access arrangements again before your visit.
