Žabeň – Cycling Route, River Landscape and Local History
Accommodation in Žabeň
Žabeň combines a long-distance cycling route with a river landscape and local history. The town offers several specific points of interest to help you choose where to stay: the Ostrava–Beskydy connection, the floodplain of the Ostravice, and cultural and historical themes ranging from the first written mention to the chapel and weir. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to the region, you can consider whether cycling, the landscape, or the town’s history should be your main focus.
Žabeň between rivers and the cycling route
Žabeň lies in an area bordered by the Olešná and Ostravice rivers. The Ostravice was also the historic border river between Silesia and Moravia. The river therefore provides both a geographical reference point for the town and a historical connection to the region. Long-distance cycle route No. 59 Ostrava–Beskydy runs through Žabeň. The route directly links Ostrava and Beskydy, giving the town a clear connection to cycling tourism.
Another cycling connection comes from a project section of the Ostrava–Beskydy cycle route: the 7,380 m section between Vratimov and Sviadnov involved the Slezská brána Region Municipal Association and the municipalities of Vratimov, Paskov, Řepiště, Žabeň, and Sviadnov as partners. This project involvement should be distinguished from route No. 59, which runs through Žabeň: the project section lies between Vratimov and Sviadnov, while route No. 59 passes through Žabeň. This makes it possible to consider the local route and Žabeň’s role in the longer connection project separately.
Floodplain and protected area along the Ostravice
The Ostravice floodplain near Žabeň is designated as the “U Žabně” regional biocorridor. A Natura 2000 European protected area is also located along the Ostravice. The biocorridor relates to the floodplain near Žabeň, while the protected area lies along the Ostravice. These add distinct nature and landscape themes to the river setting. If you would like to take these into account when choosing your destination, you can consider the floodplain and river corridor as separate points of interest alongside the cycling route.
Chapel, document, and waterworks
The first written mention of Žabeň dates to around 1460, providing an approximate early date for the town’s history. The local chapel is known as the Chapel of Saint Fabian and Saint Sebastian. A document from 1838, kept in the parish church in Paskov, records that the residents of Žabeň pledged to build a chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian; they fulfilled that pledge. This adds a historical connection to Saint Sebastian to the chapel’s current name.
Another specific connection to local history is the Stolbergův weir. It is located where water was diverted from the Ostravice to Paskov. Thus, alongside the chapel, the relationship between the river and the diversion of water to Paskov also stands out as a theme in the town’s history.
Miniature town in the garden of the Lukšík family
The garden of the Lukšík family, near house No. 128, features a miniature town built by Vladislav Jančík. A magnificent castle stands at its center. If you would like to include this miniature town in your travel plans, check in advance whether a visit is possible.
Cycling races with different time references
The “Velká cena Žabně” is a cycling race for children and young people. On May 10, 2025, it took place at “Visalaje,” the fire brigade sports ground; it was listed again in the municipal events calendar for 2026. The “O pohár starosty obce Žabeň” competition has been held repeatedly. Its 38th edition took place on June 9, 2012, at the fire brigade sports ground in Žabeň; this competition also appears in the municipal events archive for 2026. The dates give the races different historical reference points. If you would like to plan your stay around a race, check the current event dates.
