Radimovice is shaped by its railway structures, local festivals and the landscape along the Mohelka. The municipality offers a range of highlights for a stay: technical history, historic statues, seasonal events and nature watching.

Railway and Monuments

The railway tunnel beneath Radimovice, on the line between Pardubice and Liberec, was excavated between 1856 and 1858 and is 676 metres long. Sychrovský Viaduct is located within the cadastral area of the municipality of Radimovice. It is 120 metres long and 11.5 metres wide, and rises 32 metres above the Mohelka valley. The figures show their different scales: the tunnel is considerably longer, while the viaduct’s width and height above the valley are also striking.

Local monuments include sandstone statues of Saint Lawrence, Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Florian. They date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The statue of Saint Barbara stands on a hill with views of Radimovice and the surrounding landscape.

Festivals and the History of Leisure

Masopust is the municipality’s largest cultural event and includes a masked procession. Visitors can take part in a competition for the best carnival doughnuts and sample traditional carnival specialities. As this is a seasonal tradition, check the date and programme for the year in question.

Sychrovská pouť has been mentioned since the 19th century and has been held on the first Sunday in September since 1920. Market stalls and fairground rides line Radimovice’s main street. For this recurring event, too, check the dates and arrangements for the year in question.

The state château of Sychrov is very close to Radimovice. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check the current visitor regulations. The history of leisure in the area also includes Vila Zelenka: it was built as the first recreation or holiday house in the vicinity of the château and served this purpose in the years that followed.

Landscape and Wildlife

The middle course of the Mohelka is a transitional section between a mountain river and a lowland river, known as the grayling zone. Brown trout, grayling and bullhead are found in this stretch of the river. Kingfishers, grey wagtails and dippers are relatively common along the grayling zone. More than 150 bird species have been recorded in Radimovice.

Mallards, coots, the non-native Egyptian goose and reed warblers regularly breed at Světský rybník. Below the summit of Hrobka lies a body of water covering about two hectares, identified on some maps as “Světský rybník.” It has no inflow and is fed solely by rain and snow.

Relatively well-preserved beech stands grow on the steep northern slopes above the Mohelka. In early spring, flowering undergrowth plants can be seen on steep slopes around the Mohelka, among the remnants of beech stands. The natural highlights therefore vary by season: breeding birds by the water are complemented by the visible spring display on the slopes.
