Modřišice: Log houses and village history
Accommodation in Modřišice
Modřišice combines historic village architecture with the opportunity for a walk along the Jizera. Several log houses have been preserved in the older part of the village; there is also a stone cross, protected farmsteads, and religious sculptures. These offer two perspectives for a visit: the architectural forms of individual houses and farmsteads, and other historical features in and around the municipality. A walk along the flood-protection dam adds an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors to the village’s history.
Log houses and historic farmsteads
House No. 10 at Marků is considered a notable building in Modřišice. It is a two-storey log house and an example of vernacular log-house architecture in the central Pojizeří region. It is thought to date from the 18th century. Parts of the house were reconstructed in masonry more recently.
Farmstead No. 14 dates from the 19th century. Its two-storey log house has a post-and-beam structure, a carved gallery, and a richly decorated gable. The farmstead also includes a freestanding log barn. The 18th-century date for House No. 10 remains tentative, while the 19th century is given for No. 14. This makes it possible to place the two examples in their respective periods without presenting the dating of House No. 10 as certain.
At Farmstead No. 14, both features can be found together. The carved gallery, decorated gable, and freestanding barn add specific architectural details to the description of the residential building.
Cross, farmsteads, and religious sculptures
The stone cross in the center of Modřišice dates from 1796. It stands next to the bell tower and House No. 1 and is listed in the central register of immovable cultural monuments. Farmstead No. 1 at Kvapilů is designated a state monument. The two entries therefore refer to different objects and monument statuses.
A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands at the wayside cross between Modřišice and Podháj. On a field near Modřišice, wayside shrines of the Boží muka type have been preserved; the associated figure is kept elsewhere. The village and its surroundings thus feature different forms of religious monuments: the stone cross in the center, the statue at the wayside cross, and the shrines in the field.
Walks along the dam and hiking trails in the surrounding area
You can walk along the flood-protection dam that separates Modřišice from the Jizera. Hiking trails in the surrounding area also lead, for example, to the Hruboskalsko rock town, which lies outside Modřišice. For orientation, it is helpful to distinguish between the local walking route along the dam and regional hiking destinations: they offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Modřišice, consider which of these themes matters most for your trip: historic buildings and monuments in the village, a walk along the dam, or hiking trails in the surrounding area. This lets you choose a destination based on your interests without conflating the village’s history with Hruboskalsko, which is located elsewhere.
