Elbogen: Castle, Museums and Cultural History
Accommodation in Elbogen
Elbogen (Loket) offers a range of attractions for a stay, including its castle, museums and historic buildings. When looking for a hotel in Elbogen, you can decide whether you want to focus mainly on exploring the castle and its exhibitions or include cultural sites and outdoor trails as well.
Loket Castle and Its Exhibitions
Loket Castle is a royal residence more than 900 years old, set on a granite massif encircled by the Ohře River. The public visitor route includes porcelain exhibitions, collections from the former town museum, an arms museum and an exhibition on medieval criminal law. The layout of the exhibitions and access may change during restoration work.
The exhibition on medieval criminal law is housed in the authentic cellars of the former prison. The castle brings together a range of themes: collections, town history and the history of criminal law. The Museum of Secret Societies displays 700 exhibits relating to Freemasons, Illuminati, Rosicrucians and Skull and Bones.
The Black Tower also combines history with a visit to an exhibition. Its origins date back to the 13th century; it was part of the fortifications of the so-called Lower Castle, guarded the town entrance and served as a watchtower. Today, it houses an exhibition on traditional crafts, including pottery, carpentry and food processing. The tower offers views of the town of Loket and the castle. Opening arrangements may vary by season.
Historic Collections and Buildings
The Museum of Carlsbad Drinking Cups displays more than 3,000 cups dating from the second half of the 18th century to 1945. They were used for drinking Carlsbad mineral water. The time span also makes the collection interesting for visitors curious about everyday objects and how they were used.
Another glimpse into the town’s history can be found at the Brewery Mini-Museum in the Payer House, one of the town’s oldest buildings. It is part of the Svatý Florian family brewery. On display are the traditional production of barrels, malt processing, historical bottling methods and old machinery. Access arrangements may change.
The original town fortifications were built during the reign of Přemysl Otakar II. Their associated bastions still retain their loopholes. St. Wenceslas Church stands on the site of an originally Romanesque church, probably built before the mid-13th century. The Goethe monument commemorates Johann Wolfgang Goethe (1749–1832), who visited Loket frequently. His diaries record three journeys through the town and ten stays there.
Trails, Views and Getting There
The Třešňovka recreational trail lies near Loket. It has 23 stations, a viewpoint overlooking the castle and town, a picnic area and interactive features for children. Facilities may be changed or maintained seasonally.
The Ohře Valley has its own access restriction: it is accessible only on foot or by bicycle; temporary restrictions may apply. The castle itself can be reached almost all the way to the destination on foot, on horseback, by bicycle, by water, by car or by train. Routes and restrictions may change, so it is advisable to check current conditions before travelling.
The Loket visitor centre provides a town map with tips for the historic centre and scenic routes around the town. Map content may be updated. The map therefore offers a practical starting point for including these areas in your own plans.
Cultural History Beyond the Castle
Cultural events and motorsport are also part of the town’s history. The Loketské kulturní léto festival was founded in 2000; at the first performance on 6 July 2000, Dvořák’s opera Rusalka was performed. Since its first race in 1995, the Loket motocross track featured for decades on the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar. These details describe the history of the festival and the track, not a current programme or an upcoming race date.
