When looking for a hotel in Katzengrün, the character of the destination can also factor into your choice. Kaceřov combines a distinctive landscape setting with a clear focus on historic buildings. For travelers interested in local history and architecture, the focus is not only on the castle, but also on chapels and individual monuments. The buildings and memorials have different historical associations and offer various points of entry for exploring Katzengrün.

Location and historical context

Kaceřov lies where the Ore Mountains, the Eger Basin and the Sokolov Basin meet. The town’s location thus brings together three named geographical regions. The first written mention of Kaceřov dates from 1312. Another historical reference is the road between Prague and Erfurt, which was built in the mid-18th century and passed through Kaceřov. The early written record and this later transport connection mark different periods in the town’s history.

Kaceřov Castle and its grounds

Kaceřov Castle is regarded as the municipality’s most important monument and as a remarkable example of a small rural Baroque manor house. The castle grounds include a farmyard, a park and a castle pond. The term manor house identifies the castle as a rural seat of lordship; the farmyard, park and pond extend the description beyond the castle building itself. In this way, the main historic landmark combines an architectural classification with specific features of the estate.

The remains of a circular fortification lie on the slope above the castle pond. It had a diameter of 18 meters. This monument is defined by both a clearly stated shape and a specific measurement, as well as its location on the slope. The circular fortification offers a different historical point of reference from the castle, which is described as a Baroque manor house.

Chapels and other monuments

A small Chapel of St. Anne stands near the castle. It was created in the 1890s from an older building dating from around 1820, which had been used by the castle gardener. The chapel is a rectangular building above the Libocký potok. It has an apsidal, or apse-shaped, end and is designed in the Neo-Gothic style. The chapel’s history and architectural form therefore complement the castle’s Baroque character.

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is also located in Kaceřov. A late Baroque column of the Holy Trinity bears an inscription with the year 1770. On the road from Kaceřov to Chlum sv. Máří, a partially preserved Marian cross or Marian column stands on the cadastral boundary. Beside house No. 28, at the western edge of the built-up area, stands a well-preserved statue of St. Anthony of Padua. The year 1719 is inscribed on the front of its pedestal.

The dates and architectural forms offer different ways to place the monuments in historical and thematic context: from the older building from which the Chapel of St. Anne developed to the inscriptions on the column and statue. If history and architecture are important to you when choosing a destination, the castle grounds, religious buildings and individual monuments can offer different focal points for exploring Katzengrün.
