Discover Vysokov
Accommodation in Vysokov
Vysokov brings together memorials to the events of 1866, routes and a varied natural landscape. In good weather, views open up over the mountain panoramas of the Krkonoše and Orlické Mountains. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Vysokov, it may help to first decide whether memorials, routes or nature will be the focus of your trip. The historic sites point to the history of the battle, the educational trail and cycle route offer different journeys, and the biocentre showcases the landscape.
Cultural History and Memorials
The “Myslivec” memorial commemorates the Czech soldiers of the 6th Rifle Battalion who fell in the 1866 war. It was erected in 1906 as a sandstone monument. This links a specific military dedication with a particular year of construction and material—useful clues for placing the memorial’s historical significance in context.
The “Jehlanec jízdy” war memorial stands at the highest point of the battlefield. It was erected on the 35th anniversary of the Battle of Náchod and commemorates the cavalry battle between Austrian and Prussian troops. While “Myslivec” is dedicated to the fallen members of a specific Czech battalion, “Jehlanec jízdy” focuses on the engagement and its anniversary. Together, the two memorials represent distinct historical connections to 1866.
The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus tells a different story about the area: it was built in 1936 on the site of a smithy that had burned down. The chapel is near the “Vysokov, most” bus stop, a specific landmark in this part of the village.
The “Vysokovský kohout,” a national amateur film festival with international participation, is part of the cultural life here. It takes place at the U Kohouta restaurant in Vysokov.
Educational Trail, Cycle Route and Winter
The “NÁCHOD – VYSOKOV – VÁCLAVICE 1866” educational trail runs from Náchod State Chateau to Václavice railway station, passing through Vysokov. The marked KČT cycle route 4056, “Po stopách bojů 1866,” also runs through the village and is 26 kilometres long in total. The two routes can be distinguished by different details: the educational trail’s endpoints are given, while the cycle route also has a marker, name and total length.
When planning, you can therefore consider whether the connection between Náchod Chateau and Václavice railway station or the 26-kilometre cycle route should be the focus of your trip. In winter, cross-country skiing is also possible in Vysokov when snow conditions are good; this activity expressly depends on the snow cover.
Landscape and Natural Environment
The Biocentrum v Luhách comprises meadow slopes bordered by different areas of woodland. These include stands of pine, birch, oak and spruce, as well as old beech woodland. The mix of open meadow slopes and different tree species gives the natural environment a character distinct from the memorials and historic routes.
You can reach the biocentre via the road from Vysokov to Starkoč. Turn right under the railway bridge on the Starkoč–Václavice line. Two railway lines also feature in the area’s history: the line from Jaroměř to Trutnov was built between 1859 and 1869, and the Choceň–Meziměstí line between 1872 and 1875; both run through Vysokov.
