Sněžné: Nature, history and cycling routes
Accommodation in Sněžné
Sněžné lies in a gentle valley in the Náchodská vrchovina uplands, in the northeastern part of the Eagle Mountains. Its elevation ranges from 540 to 738 metres above sea level. The town’s history includes linen production and traditional timber buildings; the surrounding area has natural meadows, viewpoints and cycling routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Sněžné, you can plan your days around whether you are particularly interested in history, cycling or nature.
Landscape and nature around Sněžné
Nearby are botanically interesting, damp to boggy meadows. Trollius, orchids, spring snowflakes and primroses grow there. The Louka u Čtvrtečkova mlýna nature monument is also nearby, on the left bank of the Zlatý potok. Spring snowflakes bloom abundantly in this area. The plant life is therefore a distinct attraction alongside the town’s buildings and paths.
From the hill above the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, there are views of the surrounding area and the ridge of the Eagle Mountains. The chapel is also a landmark in the landscape: it stands on the edge of town and is the starting point of the Bílé lišky nature trail.
Local history and timber buildings
A linen manufactory was established in Sněžné in the second half of the 18th century, employing up to 500 home weavers. The former manufactory building, No. 1, is a protected timber structure. Numerous log houses are among the town’s tourist attractions. You can also visit a traditional former school building constructed of timber.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows was consecrated in 1892 and is an architecturally and historically significant building. Together with the log houses and the former school building, it offers a different perspective on local history from the former linen production: here, the focus is on building methods and religious heritage.
Skutina Fortress
One of Sněžné’s tourist attractions is the unfinished Skutina Fortress. It is part of the Czechoslovak border fortification system, built from 1935 to 1938 along what was then the border of Czechoslovakia. In bunker N-S 48 U Stodol, part of the Skutina Fortress Museum, there is a 36-metre-deep shaft with 201 steps. Around nine metres of the underground concrete gallery are open to visitors. The site opened to the public as the Skutina Fortress Museum in 2001. As access arrangements for the underground area may change, check the latest information before your visit.
On foot and by bike
Opened in 2025, the Bílé lišky nature trail is a three-kilometre circular route with 18 stops on nature and local history. It starts at the Chapel of Our Lady of the Snows on the edge of town, passes through the forest and a municipal avenue, and returns to the chapel. The trail includes information boards with activities and play features, including a dendrophone and an exercise bike. The route and individual installations may change; check the latest information before your visit. A blue-marked hiking trail also passes by the chapel. Check its current route locally.
Two marked cycling routes, with different destinations and approximate lengths, are described. Route 4214 runs from Janov and Tis via Sněžné and Polom by the chapel to Olešnice v Orlických horách and is about seven kilometres long. Route 4325 runs from Sněžné via Janov and Ohnišov to Dobruška; it is approximately twelve kilometres long. This lets you compare the rides by direction and stated distance. Signage and surfaces may change; check the current route before setting out.
Another easy route leads from Sněžné through the valley of the Zlatý potok and back. It starts at the Horalka chalet in Sněžné and is also suitable for children in a bicycle trailer. The route’s specific conditions may change.
