Discover Javornice: Culture, Sport and Landscape
Accommodation in Javornice
Javornice brings together several distinct themes for a stay: the architecture of the Church of St. George, two artistic memorial sites, the sports and recreation area, and Jahodová hora. This takes you from architectural forms and art to sports facilities and a landscape destination. When planning your visit, you can prioritize these highlights according to the themes that interest you most.
Culture in and around the Church of St. George
The Church of St. George in Javornice is a single-nave building with a rectangular ground plan. A square tower projects from the west façade. “Single-nave” describes the layout of the church interior; together with the rectangular ground plan, it describes the building’s simple overall form. An annex with a sculptural group depicting Christ on the Mount of Olives adjoins the church. This building thus combines a clearly defined exterior structure with a specific religious subject. The Church of St. George complex in Javornice is an immovable cultural monument.
Artists’ memorial sites
The memorial to Marie and Vojtěch Sedláček brings two artistic fields together. The permanent exhibition includes paintings by Vojtěch Sedláček; another section is devoted to the lace art of Marie Sedláčková-Serbousková. Painting and lace art are therefore presented as distinct areas of focus. A guided tour also includes the painter’s studio and the home shared by both artists. The tour thus broadens the experience beyond the works on display to include the work and living spaces that are part of the visit.
The memorial room for Josef Korejz Blatinský displays works depicting villagers in traditional costumes from various parts of Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia. There are also landscapes, houses and customs. The subjects therefore range from people in traditional dress to views and cultural themes. This memorial room offers a different artistic focus from the memorial to Marie and Vojtěch Sedláček: here, the focus is on the people and ways of life depicted.
Jahodová hora and the New Year tradition
At 505 metres, Jahodová hora is the highest point in Javornice; it lies above the village district of Betlém. From there, you can enjoy views of the Orlické Mountains. The hill can be reached via a preserved section of the old Imperial Road. Actual route conditions may vary, so check them before your visit. Its elevation, views and named access route make Jahodová hora a clearly defined landscape destination among Javornice’s attractions.
The town is also associated with a recurring custom. Since the 1980s, tourists and people of goodwill have gathered on New Year’s Day at around 2 p.m. on Jahodová hora. They join hands and wish one another happiness and good health for the new year. If you are interested in local traditions, this offers a different way to experience Jahodová hora from taking in the views: here, the shared New Year’s wishes are part of the occasion.
Sports and recreation area
The sports and recreation area in Javornice includes a playground for children aged three to fourteen. This age range can help you assess whether the facilities are suitable for children travelling with you. The sports facilities are clearly specified: the area has a 110-metre athletics straight with four lanes, a long jump facility and a shot-put sector. It therefore caters to running, jumping and throwing events. The length and number of lanes define the running area, while the other two facilities add different areas of athletics. This means you can explore the area not only for its playground but also for its sports facilities.
