Slatina Nad Úpou combines marked hiking trails with buildings and stories from the town’s history. When planning a stay, you can easily distinguish the local highlights: a circular hike, a longer cycling route, or historical connections in Boušín. The trails and places give you concrete ideas for planning your days.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Route

The “Justynčina stezka” is a 7-kilometer circular hiking trail that follows marked paths. Three information boards along the route describe twelve interesting stops relating to nature, culture, and local sights. The boards thus connect the loop to several topics—from nature to local attractions.

For a longer cycling trip, consider the KČT cycle route No. 4018, “Okruh Boženy Němcové.” It is a 38-kilometer circular route, rated moderate, with numerous stopping points. The comparison is between 7 kilometers of hiking trails and a 38-kilometer cycling route; the “moderate” rating applies to the cycling route. The medieval educational trail “Po stopách erbu zlatého třmene” also passes partly through the Slatina Nad Úpou area and has five stops.

Historical Traces in the Townscape

“Bathildis Strasse” is marked at three locations by large sandstone blocks. At the beginning and end are the carved inscriptions “BATHILDIS STRASSE ….. SILNICE BATHILDY,” with an arrow; in the middle is “BATHILDIS PLATZ ….. STÁNEK BATHILDY.” The inscriptions make the three markers recognizable by their different names as well.

The “Slatinská zvonice” is a wooden log structure with a square floor plan. It stands on raised ground in the center of the village, near the municipal office, and has been preserved in its original form. It is documented from 1682; Prince Piccolomini had it built. Another named landmark is the “Mariánský sloup,” listed as a cultural monument under registration number 1875.

Boušín: Church and Stories

The “Navštívení Panny Marie” church stands in Boušín, a part of Slatina Nad Úpou in the Náchod District. It was built between 1682 and 1692 at the expense of Prince Lorenzo Piccolomini, replacing an older wooden church. The building is a single-nave, oriented Baroque structure without a tower. A small path leads downhill from the church to the “Kaple Panny Marie” chapel and the Boušínská studánka spring.

Boušín is a pilgrimage settlement associated with the story of the miraculous healing of a deaf-mute girl. Božena Němcová recorded this story in her work “Babička.” A story connected with the Justynčina stezka concerns Justynka, a Jewish girl from Hronov. In 1823, she was sent to Boušín to be prepared for admission to the Catholic Church, and was later baptized there.

Boušínská samota is the oldest part of the municipality. It includes a church, a rectory, a cemetery, and a chapel with a spring. Together with the Baroque church, the path to the chapel, and the traditional stories, Boušín offers several different historical points of interest for your stay.
