Landscape and Archaeological Traces

The archaeological site of Pardědub lies on a rise above the left bank of the Elbe. It is located in the municipality of Skalice, in the cadastral areas of Skalice u Smiřic and Skalička nad Labem, and is classified as a hilltop settlement and fortification.

A remnant of the prehistoric fortification, consisting of a ditch and rampart, survives as a raised feature in the northeastern part.

History and Heritage

Archaeological finds attest to settlement in the area as early as the Early Hillfort Period. The first written mention of Skalice dates to 1143, when Bishop Jan of Lochenice donated the district known as Skalice to the Premonstratensian Strahov Monastery in Prague. Settlement during the Early Hillfort Period predates the first written mention of Skalice in 1143.

A fortress was also built in Skalice. Its residents had to guard the route from Hradec through Skalice to Smiřice, as well as a ford across the Elbe crossed by this route. The historic route ran from Hradec through Skalice to Smiřice; today, marked cycle route No. 4283 runs from Smržov through Skalice to Lochenice.

The historic village square in the western part of Skalice is part of the local historical and cultural heritage. In front of house No. 13 stands a stone crucifix with a statue of the Virgin Mary in a niche and an enclosure; next to it is a bell tower with a concrete structure.

Events and Cycle Route

An elongated stone lies in a field by Dolní bahna, on the road from Skalice to Smiřice. Two crosses are carved into it; below them are two broad-bladed axes depicted with their blades facing each other. There is also an inscription, but it is illegible.

The municipality's annual cultural events include the Pivní slavnosti Skalice beer festival. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the specific event dates.

Marked cycle route No. 4283 runs from Smržov through Skalice to Lochenice. Check the current route markings on site before setting out. Together with the archaeological and historical themes, this offers a clear distinction between a trip focused on local history and a stay that also includes a ride along the designated route.
