Otovice U Broumova combines Baroque buildings and older monuments with geological sites and marked routes. This makes the town interesting to visitors with a range of travel interests: you can explore church architecture and local history, or focus on the landscape along the Stěnava, fossils, and cycling and hiking routes. To help plan your trip, it is useful to think in advance about which of these themes you want to shape your stay.

Baroque Buildings and Local History

The Church of St. Barbara was built in 1725–1726 to designs by the Baroque architects Dientzenhofer, father and son. Its oval ground plan and the side chapels that project from the outer walls give the building a distinctive shape. The construction dates and ground plan offer two specific starting points if you are interested in Baroque architecture.

The Baroque Umlauf water mill is also one of Otovice’s valuable monuments. The single-storey masonry building dates from the 1770s and stands beside a millrace that has since been filled in. The portal bears the monogram AB and the year 1776. The mill is notable both for its place in architectural history and for this precisely dated detail.

Other monuments represent different periods. The Marian Column dates from 1639. The war memorial was erected in 1926 and originally commemorated 30 local men who had fallen on the fronts of the First World War. Its dedication reads “Obětem válek”. Another notable work is the ensemble comprising the Column of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, along with statues of saints and angels: it was created in the second half of the 19th century and was declared a cultural monument by the Ministry of Culture in 2014. The folk architecture that characterizes a large part of the built-up area also contributes to the town’s character.

Geological Sites Along the Stěnava

Otovice also offers points of interest for anyone interested in the history of the Earth. U zastávky is one of two small protected areas along the Stěnava; both lie in the first zone of the protected landscape area. The protected areas place the river landscape in a broader context, while several paleontological sites reveal specific geological features.

Ve strži is a Permian paleontological site in the cadastral area of Otovice u Broumova. At U školy, plant fossils are found in the dark limestones of the Olivětín beds. The Hoprich outcrops extend from the footbridge below the church to the bridge by the school. The layers there contain fossil impressions of Walchia conifers and ferns, as well as occasional fossil remains of ray-finned fish. The sites described thus differ both in their location and in the fossils found at each one.

Cycling and Hiking Routes

Two routes with different total lengths are relevant for a cycling trip. The 126-kilometre Stolové hory Cycle Route 4020 has an information board in the shelter at the bus stop. The blue-marked Javoří hory Cycle Route 4002 is 36 kilometres long and connects to Route 4020 in Otovice. At 126 kilometres, Route 4020 is longer than the 36-kilometre Route 4002. The connecting route between Šonov and Otovice is another option along the way, offering scenic views.

A blue-marked hiking trail leads from Otovice railway station to Božanov and onward to the Broumovské stěny. Train service to Otovice was discontinued on 11 December 2005. For planning purposes, it is therefore useful to treat the hiking trail as route information and the rail connection as historical information.

Getting There and Choosing a Theme

Road II/302 connects the border crossing with Otovice, Broumov and Meziměstí. Together with the information about routes, monuments and geological sites, it gives a varied picture of the destination. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose where to stay based on your own priorities: for example, Baroque architecture and local history, geological features, or cycling and hiking routes. The themes described can help you decide whether Otovice suits your travel interests.
