Cultural history and outdoor activities offer different focuses for your stay.
Church and medieval local history
The Church of St. Peter and Paul complex is located almost in the center of Milovice U Hořic. The complex includes a cemetery and an octagonal mortuary built into the surrounding wall. The church was originally a Gothic building; the surviving Gothic elements date from the second half of the 14th century. It was listed as a cultural monument by 1972 at the latest. Its Gothic origins, medieval structural features and monument status describe different aspects of the building’s history.
In the Middle Ages, the Church of St. Peter and the rectory in Milovice formed an administrative center serving the surrounding parish villages. The school also developed in Milovice along an important country road. Via Prague and Hradec, it connected the southwestern lands with Poland. The historical importance of the church and rectory thus extended beyond their role in the village.
Monuments around the cemetery
The statue of St. John of Nepomuk stands in front of the cemetery. Its pedestal bears an inscription from 1812; the statue was restored in 2009. In the park in front of the local cemetery stands the Immaculata, made of Hořice sandstone. According to its inscription, it dates from 1899. The location, material and inscriptions distinguish the two works, as do their dates.
The statue of St. Francis of Paola stands beside the cemetery, on the side of the path lined with a lime-tree avenue. A relief depicts St. Wenceslas and St. Ludmila; the inscription dates the statue to 1799. The Cyril and Methodius cross stands at a crossroads near the cemetery. It dates from 1854 and was restored in 1888, 2001 and 2009. The inscriptions and restoration years provide distinct chronological reference points for each of the monuments.
From 1754 to 1788, the Panská hospoda building served as a post station on the Saxon-Moravian postal route and was associated with an inn and a butcher’s shop. It is now privately owned. Please view the building only from public areas.
